Babies: 0 - 3 Months

cereal in breast milk?!

My baby is two months old, officially today.  She has been going to daycare for a week and a half.  She normally takes three-four bottles of pumped breastmilk at school, about 12-15 ounces in the amount of time she is there.

Monday and Tuesday of this week, she has begun taking 20 ounces while she is at 'school.'  They asked me yesterday, and someone else this morning, when I was going to start putting cereal in her bottle- this shocked me because I figure breastfed babies can have as much milk as they want and I didn't event think about giving DD1 cereal until she was at least 4 months old.  Am I right??

Re: cereal in breast milk?!

  • I would go on what the pediatrician recommends and not what some daycare worker brings up.  My daughter was EBF'd and I never put cereal in her bottle.

  • Breast fed, formula fed, doesn't matter.  Cereal doesn't go in bottles.

FWIW, DS was exclusively breastfed until 6 months old, meaning, he didn't get any solids until that time, including cereal (which he still hasn't had)

  • How long is she at daycare? 20 ozs is a lot...

  • I thought that was a lot too, but she is a BIG baby... she is already 15 lbs (n/m she started out 3 ounces shy of ten lbs).  I just figured she was hitting a growth spurt- she is there from 7:30am to just after 4 pm-  8.5 hours.
  • I would never put cereal in a bottle. In my opinion, it's the easy way out and at no benefit to your baby. Maybe there are times when it's necessary (times when it's recommended by a ped), but usually that isn't the case.

My Grandma has been pestering me to add cereal to LO's bottle since she was a week old! My daughter is a great baby and has only ever had one fussy night. Sure, she only sleeps in 2-4 hour spurts, but that is normal. Why would I add cereal to her bottle? Grandma says because she'll sleep longer. My Aunt chimed in and started on the cereal bandwagon, as well.

It's just empty calories filling their bellies instead of nutritious milk.
