Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How many ozs in 4 mo's bottles?

Hi Ladies.  My DS is 4 months (weighs about 17 lbs) and I EBF.  While Im at work, he goes to daycare and takes three (pumped) bottles.  I've been giving him 6 ozs or a little more in each bottle, but I keep reading posts where 4-5 mos are getting 8 oz bottles.  DS eats every three hours or so (I BF him once in the morning and ususally twice at night) and doesn't seem to be hungry when he's finished eating.  Should I be giving him more??

Re: How many ozs in 4 mo's bottles?

  • for breastfed babies things are a little different. The starting point is 1 oz per hour your apart (kellymom.com) and then you tweak for your child. My LO is 4 months and has 2.5 oz every two hours.  What we did with her was make up 1 oz bottles to start and then incrementally increased until we found the amount that she was satisfied with (not crying when done for more, able to make it to next normal feeding time...etc)

  • As pp stated, BFed babies are different than formula fed babies. If your baby is happy with 6 oz, and not crying for more, than I would stick with that. I would not overfeed, especially since there is research saying that is contributing to obesity. My 4 month old when given a bottle (which is not often) only drink 3 to 5 oz at a time.
  • My four-month-olds drink anywhere between 3 and 7 ounces of BM per bottle feeding, with the average being about 5, and eat about as often as yours during the day. They sleep long stretches at night, so our total number of feedings per day is 6-7. I let them eat until they seem satisfied. I don't stress over the smaller bottles, because sometimes they have bigger ones, and vice versa. I'm not positive what our total ounces per day would be because I nurse when I'm with them, but they average 15 ounces over the three feedings the nanny gives them, which is about right.

Point is, I definitely don't think you need to start making your baby 8-oz bottles. Sounds to me like you're doing fine.

  • Thanks ladies!!!  I feel better after reading all of your posts.  I was getting concerned because pumping 18 ozs a day is hard enough for me -- I didn't/don't know if its possible for me to pump anymore than that!
  • My DD takes 4oz bottes at daycare.  I think that is too much (based on how many times a day she nurses and kellymom calculations), but I can keep up with it, so that's what I send.

  • DS will be 4 months friday and eats three to four 5 - 5/12 oz bottles of pumped BM during the day (between 6:30am - 4pm) and I nurse him twice at night (usually when we get home between 4:30 and 5:30, depending on his last feeding, and once after his bath, around 7:30).  He gets about 15-20 oz during the day and whatever he gets when nursing (I'm guessing another 4-5 oz each time) so I'm guessing it's about 25 - 35 oz a day.

I plan on asking if this is an ok amount at his 4 mo visit next week.

  • I can't even fathom an 8oz bottle for a 4 month old! DS has NEVER drank more than 6oz at a time in a bottle. The girls who are almost 4 months old are drinking between 4-5oz/feeding.
  • At 4mo (16 1/2lbs) my DS was having a 5-51/2 bottle every 3 hours. He nurses at 6am and after i get off work. The nursery lets me know when he cries for more so we can up the amount. if he acts satisfied I would say you are giving him the right amount :) He is now 5 mo old and is getting 51/2-6oz.

  • DS is EBF and he gets three bottles while I'm at work, at 5 ounces each. Sometimes he eats a little more, sometimes a little less. Sounds like what you're doing is just fine, plus he'll show signs if he's not getting enough!
