Military Families

ft. Rucker AL

We might be moving there and just wondering what to expect? Is there alot to do? What major cities is it by? How is the area around base? Any info would be helpful :)

Re: ft. Rucker AL

  • We just moved here a month ago. It is a pretty quiet area but there are things to do if you seek them out. We are living on post and like our house a lot. There are 3 towns just outside of post. Ozark from what I can tell is pretty small, Daleville is a little bigger and Enterprise is the biggest. From what I can tell most people who live off post live in Enterprise. The biggest city it Dothan, a 20 minute drive but worth it if you need to shop.

Like I said its a pretty quiet area but there are a lot of families and moms groups so it is what you make of it.

Edit: Send me a PM or reply if you have any other questions I'll do my best to answer them,

  • We just moved from there about a month ago. There is not much to do in terms of tourism type stuff. Really shopping (and even that isn't all that great) and eating out are the go to things on the weekends. Panama City is only 1.5hours south and I loved it there! I would avoid living in Daleville, I would actually recommend living on post if you can, the lines at the gates in the morning are insane and a bunch of the houses are brand new. Enterprise is a nice town to live in, still a one high school town type place.

Rucker was tolerable for me, I do not however look forward to moving back anytime soon. Its just really isolated from everything and after awhile it got old. If you do make it there, be sure to check out Best Burger on Hwy 84, awesome food and customer service!

  • We just moved from there in Sept.  I agree with living on base.  They are building a lot of new housing.

I loved shopping in Dothan.  As for stuff to do, there is an incredible drive-in movie theatre in Wicksburg on Hwy 84 (Continental Drive-In).  They show new movies and usually do a 2 for the price of one.  Basically you pay 7 dollars and get to see two movies from one screen.  There are four different screens and they show 8 movies (2 per screen).

I also recommend driving to Panama City.  I loved visiting ATL as well since it was around a 3.5-4 hr drive.  Jacksonville, FL was also a nice weekend trip.  We even went to Mobile and MS to play in the casino's.

The mall in town is small and not what I would consider a mall.  Oh and if you bank with Bank of America; change your account to a new bank since the closest one is 2-3 hrs away in FL.

Its very quiet and country.  I actually miss it.
