really freaking mad

I had another fertility meeting with my dr today.  I have been on Femara for aobut 4 months now and I have been asked to have another hormone analysis and DH needs to have a semen analysis too.  I called my insurance today to find out the cost of the labs and found out that once a diagnosis has been made of infertility, they cover NOTHING.  I called them a few months ago to find out how much the femara was going to cost and even though it is a lot more than I had expected, I was certainly glad something was covered.  Someone at that time told me that most in-office procedures would be covered as well as labs.  Now, if they have already diagnosed me with infertility, we now have to pay full price for everything!  If we eventually have to have an IUI, or anything else to that extent, I am not sure how much of a chunk this will take out of our savings.  I am so mad and upset.  My chances of having another just dropped off the charts:(

  • Oh my gosh, that's awful news. Sad Is there any way to talk to your doctor about changing your diagnosis so that it doesn't specifically label you as "infertile?" I know it's a longshot, but just wondering if he could work with you on the wording of your diagnosis, in hopes that some percentage of your treatment could get covered.

  • Oh that STINKS!!! I was going to suggest the same thing about your doctor.
  • awww I am sorry Peanut. I think out of pocket an IUI cycle can cost about $1000-$1500. The actual IUI itself is $120, I think Dr. A and Dr. S give discounts to out of pocket.

I hope you can get it worked out. If you move on to injectables the IF board has a sign up for meds that have been donated. I was able to receive meds a few times from that, saved me thousands.

Good luck and here if you need support. I've never taken femera, but have done clomid, gonal, 6 IUI's and IVF.

  • I'm so sorry, Kristen.  I hope your doctor's office can do something to help.

  • ugh... I'm so sorry! I hate insurance.

I also take Femara for my cycles and I was on the IF board a few weeks ago and found a discount card to use for the Femara. I take 7.5mg (15 pills) for my cycles and according to this website I can get 30 days worth of pills (so 2 cycles worth for me) for $10!!!!! A few of the girls on the board said they used it multiple times. I have the paper at home and I will send you a FB message with the info. If this cycle is a bust I plan on calling Dr. A and asking him to write me a 30 day script and trying this out.

Also, I'm not sure where you get your Femara now, but if this card I have doesn't work, I will continue with Freedom Pharmacy. The Femara is $40 for 15 pills through them. If you take a lesser dose then yours would be cheaper, obviously. I know when I filled my first scripts I was shocked at Kroger pharmacy with the cost. Now that I use them I save a ton! For instance the Ovidrel shot was going to cost me $250 at Kroger and now I pay $50 through Freedom.

Let me know if you want that info! Again, so sorry your insurance is being ridiculous. I hope they can recode some things or do something for you!

  • I am so sorry.  I understand your pain.  I also hate insurance companies with a passion.  We have avoided expensive treatments completely, because we have to pay everything out of pocket, and doing so would eliminate any thought of adopting in the future if the treatments fail.  I hate having to choose.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that.  I hope your doctor can help you out with the coding.  Even better, I hope you get a BFP super soon so you don't even have to worry about it!.
  • What a mess. I have seen this at work a few times since I work for a Catholic school and none of our birth control or infertility is covered. One of our teachers took out a loan to cover an IVF cycle, which unfortunately did not work, and another teacher took out a loan from her in-laws to pay for four cycles of IUI before she got pregnant with her son. It is heartbreaking to watch people go through and I can't even imagine having to deal with it personally. I wish you lots of luck and hope you are able to figure something out.
