Breastfeeding

If you have used a lactation consultant..

did your insurance cover the cost?  And what kind of insurance do you have?  I have blue cross blue shield.  I keep meaning to have my husband call them and ask, because I'm on his policy, but I was just wondering how common it is for insurance to help with this.  I'm guessing that even if they do cover it, I'd have to pay the specialist copay, which is $40 I think, a little more than a normal doctor visit would be.

  • We also have BC....not covered. 150 out of pocket.
  • I have United and it was not covered. I paid $95.

  • We have Tricare and I don't believe it covers seeing a LC.  However, my hospital has a free breastfeeding support group 3 mornings a week run by a LC, so I just ask any questions I have then.

  • I have Tufts and it covered 3 (I think) visits up to $75/each, no copay.  I used it once, but then ended up at a BF support group where I could talk to the LC for free.

  • not covered by insurance but I went to the Hosp. BF support group that was run by a LC and that was free, she gave great tips and helped with latching (you get over everyone BF together in a room pretty quick when you are struggling!)

  • Mine was/is covered by insurance, but she works out of an outpatient clinic in a hospital that's in network (the one at which I delivered), and she did the paperwork to call my pediatrician and get referrals for each visit.

Consider contacting the hospital at which you'll deliver and asking them if they have LCs on staff.

  • We have tricare and there are 2 LC's at the hospital on post. We have never had to pay anything and I have been at least 3 times. Not sure what it would be off post or if it's even covered.
  • I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of VT ...Definately check b/c I was able to join the Better Beginnings program. This made me eligible for reimbursement of 2 LC visits and I got a brand new Medela PISA pump free of charge. If I had already had one I could have gotten visits from a housecleaner for free instead. The program also has other benefits. Good luck!!

PS-I also used the LCs at the hospital and DDs pedi office for free.

  • i would check with your hospital. i was able to see the LC at the hospital for free of charge just need an appointment and she was flexible with that.
  • my hospital has free LC visits (you have to go thier vs in home) but i can go as many times as needed, they also have a wkly support group run by one of the LC's that i can get a weight or ask quick questions. I went to 4 private one on one sessions and the group about 1/month after it was going good to keep an eye on DS's weight gain since he is a slow gainer.

That said, my insurance would have covered 3 visits - of LC's from their list.
