Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Help, what did you start with?

My LO has been getting rice cereal for a month now and loves it. Just recently we have started increasing the amount that we are giving him per his pedi, however it is stopping him up a little. He is on day 3 of not pooping, and this isn't normal at all for him. He was up crying for most of the morning because his stomach hurts. I called the pedi and asked about giving fruit to him to help move things along, and they said that was fine.

My question is, what kind of fruit would you give him? The nurse said it didn't really matter (she wasn't very helpful), but I have always heard you should start with certain ones first. I don't want to give him something "strong" like prunes first if I should start with pears for instance. What did you all start with, how much did you give them, and did it get them pooping?

  • Pears or peaches

  • I'm not there yet, but I think I remember reading that any fruit that begins with the letter P should be helpful...but really, I think any fruit would be ok...it's all about fibre, right? Except for maybe bananas...those might stop a baby up.

  • Anything that starts with a "p" will get things moving.  Pears, prunes, peaches and even peas (veggie).

I'd start with pears or peaches if you want to start with a fruit.

  • Don't be afraid of prunes, they are great for constipation! Pears, peaches, prunes are great for getting things moving. You might try a different cereal like barley. Don't feel like you have to give rice, or cereal at all. It's has almost no nutrients (or flavor) other than iron. So if you wanted you could back way off on that. Do you FF? If so, your LO gets plenty of iron and you could just explore fruits/veggies.

I exclusively breastfeed. LO hasn't ever had formula. Would you still do away with the rice, or just switch it up to oatmeal or barley?

I'd switch to oatmeal.  I ended up switching to it with DD1 and don't remember any problems with constipation.

  • Sweet potatoes also help with constipation.
  • We give DD a little bit of water with a tiny bit of prune juice... That makes her go!

  • Prune juice, prunes, pears or apples should do the trick.
  • We didn't even do rice cereal for this reason.  DD had some constipation/digestion issues early on.  Our pedi told us starting with oatmeal was fine since there were no food allergy issues on either side of our family.

If you want to stick with it, apples and prunes are both great at getting things moving.

    GL!
