Or is it fine to use a good-sized tote bag, maybe with a lot of inside pockets/dividers or an organizer put inside? Is there something special about diaper bags that regular bags don't have?
I'm a bit of a bag snob so I've begun my research already

I've already started looking around too! I don't know if you need an actual diaper bag - I'm pretty certain my SIL uses just a regular backpack. Her and BIL are very outdoorsy, she rarely carries a purse, etc. so a typical diaper bag would have looked strange on them.
I have a Coach diaper bag that I use when the kids are small. It looks like a big Coach tote, but it's lined with some kind of water-resistant material for the inevitible spills. Most purse makers have them.
I don't find all of the little pockets and dividers useful at all.
I put my wallet in the bag so I'm not carrying around 2 different bags.
Thanks for all the feedback! I wondered if there was something different about them - I haven't really looked at one up close so I wasn't sure. I guess the waterproof lining is nice, but I guess you could work around that.
Good to know! Thanks

I plan on using a designer tote bag with lots of organizers - bottle holders, diaper packs, changing pads, ziploc bags etc. My friend did this and said she far preferred it to a diaper bag (which is NMS or hers either).
I needed one and a big one at that, lol. One thing I would mention, you want something that you can attach to the stroller. In a lot of strollers the basket underneath isn't big enough to hold a diaper bag.

You can use a regular bag for sure!! But they do make some stylish diaper bags so you might like one of those! We got an OiOi tote in the giraffe print last time...
I'm not a bag hound (barely a purse carrier) and I like the convenience of having one bag that goes with baby whether the squish is with me or hubby so I'll probably pick something pretty gender neutral, messenger bag type of style. Don't know if it will be a diaper bag designed in this style or just a cool bag we find, but I know we will definitely need something for toting around the baby stuff!
p.s. sazzie, that picture is ridiculously cute. I'm pretty sure its you and your baby that does it, but maybe the stylish tote helps too.
I was planning on getting a large purse, but a friend called and told me she purchased the a black Vera Bradley diaper bag. My husband and I discussed getting a "Daddy Diaper Bag" but like he said, if we are out and about he will most likely be carrying the car seat as I have major back problems and I will most likely by carrying the lighter diaper bag
On top of that once the baby is in day care I will be doing the pick up and drop off as my husband has a company vehicle that only has one seat. We sold our second car because we were never using it. My mom uses a purse that she refers to as a "wallet on a string" I have purchased one that can live in the diaper bag and if I am going out without baby I can just pull it out and go.

naw I hate carrying stuff so I would just carry a big coach tote with diapers wipes and a changing pad and burp cloth BFing cover for short outings.
I don't really think they are that important. A bag is a bag even though I have 2 diaper bags LOL
This exactly I carry a large Coach purse which fits diapers wipes a toy and extra outfit. I am a little nervous with two though I might need a diaper bag...I love my purse so I sure hope not. Maybe DD will be potty trained by then
This is coming from someone that has three diaper bags. I have mine which looks like a HUGE purse but is waterproof. DH has the diaper dude messenger bag. He loves it (and so do I). We also have the BOB diaper bag to go with our stroller. Not as great as our others but it is still nice.
Benefits of having a diaper bag versus a purse:
hang it on stroller
waterproof lining
comes with changing pad and other little baby gadgets
I also like to be able to go out without the kid and have a bag that is crumb/diaper/wipe free.

my sister liked using a tote bag, or even just her large purse.
As she put it " I'm hipper than you sissy" LOL
I love diaper bags, they are big and roomy, mine has a built in wipe holder and bottler insulator. But of course it's your own choice.

I like some of the Oioi bags, and Nest Diaper bags has some cute ones.
https://www.nestdiaperbags.com/ I like the army green one that is on the homepage, but in navy
