Parenting after 35

I feel old

There's another forum I occasionally post on. I viewed the profile of a woman who posted something...

She's got 3 kids and 2 grandkids... She's 38!!!

Are we all in some sort of parallel universe or what?

Re: I feel old

  • Yikes.  I think she's an exception, but I suppose in a few more years it'll be common to have peers with grandchildren.  Heck, my bio-daughter is 25, it's only luck and her poor choice in partners that keeps me from being sort of a granny already.

OMG! Bio-daughter? I never knew that about you, Amy.

And yes, I'm sure she's an exception and that in a few years our peers might start having grandkids - although luckily, for me, the only chance of that is my best friend from high school who had 2 kids when he was late teens/early 20's - but it's still depressing thinking that people our age are grandparents.

  • I'm 39, and in the past year 3 girls I went to school with all had babies - and another is going to be a grandma in a couple weeks!

  • uhhh yeah. my mom, grandmother, sister, exSIL all were grandparents by the age that i had sabrina. i only have two nieces and they BOTH had kids before me.

  • If my oldest DD had a baby at the same age I was when I had her, I would be a grandma now.  Sometimes I kinda feel crazy having a 20 year old and 10 mth old at the same time but I can't imagine life without all my girls.

  • Ugh. When I first joined Facebook and reconnected with old high school peeps, I got a hard dose of reality when I saw pictures of the teenage children of people I graduated high school with. How did that happen? At the same time there were several of my high school peers that were pregnant at the same time I was.

  • With the exception of my one good friend who adopted a newborn girl in January, I'm the last of my friends to have a child.  Thank goodness for Laurie and her LO... even though Aaron is 5 months older and hulking compared to her little Anna Rose, they're only 5 months apart in age and as they get older hopefully they'll be playmates (one can only hope for a friendship too).

Edit: Though most of my friends didn't marry until their late 20s/early 30s and didn't have kids until 34/35.  So the oldest child is now 8. Only one girl I went to high school with has a college age child (she got pregnant just after graduation).

  • Oh hon, I've been dealing with concept for months!

Went to my 25th HS reunion this summer and several of my classmates have been GPs for years now.  One friend was a teenaged mom, and her son was a teenaged dad.  So she was a grandma at 32 or so!

I was certainly the novelty at the reunion.

  • A friend of mine is 41, has 2 kids ages 23 & 16 & is a grandmother. SHe just got remarried & they are now trying to conceive. I guess it could be odd one day when child & grandchild are together & the older child is calling her grandma & the younger one calling her mom.
