December 2010 Moms

Hmm...extend maternity leave?

I just figured out that I can add 4 days onto my maternity leave, but only before I give birth, not after (a complicated work policy you'll just have to trust me on).

Should I leave four days earlier?  If I don't take the time, it gets saved and rolled over into next year, which could be good.  But I am so tired already...maybe an extra four days could do me good!  I would leave December 13th instead of the 17th.

WWYD?  Save days for next year or sleep in and rest before baby comes?

  • Can you split the difference? Take 2 and save 2?

  • I'd save them for next year. Would you be able to take them all at once next year?

  • I CAN split, and do 2 and save 2.  I also get an additional ten at the beginning of next year, (school year), so I won't be completely without them.  They kind of frown upon taking all your sick days at once though without a doctor's note, so they would just be normal "here and there" sick days.

  • I would save it.

Are you leaving on the 17th because you know for sure (induction or c-section) that you're having the baby then or is that just near your due-date?

The reason I would save it is if baby ends up coming late, you may end up with time beforehand anyway.

I think she's leaving on the 17th because that's the last day of school before the winter holiday. It's easier to go out at the break.

  • It's totally up to how you're feeling... but I can somewhat relate as we have the same due date.  I'm trying to hold on until Dec 24th... it has not been easy!

If it were me, I would save them.  Try to get through the days now and then have the extra time to look forward to.  Unless you really feel like you can't work anymore... then take them early for your wellbeing.

  • Before this week, I would have said to save them. But now, I'm so tired and uncomfortable that I told my boss I'm not coming back next week, baby or no. Course that is just one day before my due date, too. I can tell you that if I get decent sleep, I'm ok. But if I don't, I'm just about worthless for the whole day.

  • TAKE THEM!  Nothing is worse than the last 4 days before Winter Break!!!  I am sure you are exhausted!  Take the time to rest and do something for yourself!!

Yep, this is it exactly.Though my vacation actually starts the next wednesday after that, those two days are such a waste because there are assemblies, etc. that I decided to just take them off anyway just in case.

  • Ok, reading all the responses, I think I'll save the days unless my sleeplessness continues.  Because if it does, I just can't go on.  I feel like I'm useless here anyway because I can barely think!  Luckily, you can kind of adjust your maternity leave at any time with an easy email to the principal and head of H.R.  So I won't feel to bad about it!

    Thanks all for the input.

With the way that I'm feeling right now (really tired and feet are swelling), I would take the extra 4 days now. You could make sure that you have everything ready and just relax before LO gets here.

    This.
