Baby Names

Which do you like better?

So obviously we're pretty early on this, but DH and I have pretty much narrowed down our girl-name options. Most likely we'll go to the hospital with these two names and choose one after the baby is born, but I was curious what everyone thought of them.

Most likely, (if it's a girl) it will either be Scarlett Anastasia or Sophia Beatrice.

We also like Eloise Victoria and Georgia Clementine, but these will most likely be "saved" for the future.

WDYT?

Honestly, I've heard it all with this name. But I think people overestimate just how often a MN is used. We like the flow, and Clementine was a compromise name.

If you look at the poll is my siggy, we have a lot of grandiose MNs. That wasn't by accident. We like them, we have a short LN, and it was a good way to incorporate names that are a little too eccentric to use as FNs.

Personally, I wish more people would go out on a limb and use a "crazy" name they love for a MN, rather than the same old boring Marie, Grace, Anne, etc....

  • dear god no - not georgia clementine.

i literally LOL every time i say it in head, and i swear i'm not trying to be mean or rude - that's just my honest reaction.

trust me, i know all too well what names can do to a child. my parents named me bama. like alabama...and while during football season, i am my family's own personal mascot and good luck charm, i got teased beyond belief  as a child. so much so, that i now go by my MN full time. so please, please think about your child and not just what you like. they could love it, but they could also really, really hate it.

  • I agree... no need for mn to be boring.  I think a mn is a great way to honor a family member.

I actually really like Georgia.  I don't really mind Clementine either.  It's just the combo that seems a little silly to me.

.....You do know Georgia is the FN? So she would go by Georgia....all the time.

Clementine is the MN. If she hates it, she would never, ever have to use it.

My name is Allie (first) Jo (middle). It sounds stupid with my married LN, so I don't use my MN anymore--on forms, on resumes, anything. If it asks for a MN, I just put my initial. So I have literally gone through the exact same thing a child named Georgia Clementine would. I've thought about this in terms of my child. It's not traumatizing. Promise.

I understand why Bama is a little out there. Georgia is not. Before it was a Southern state, it was a name. Now if I wanted to give my child two FNs: Georgia Clementine, you would totally have a point. That is not the case.

    Hope this finally makes sense.

I love Eloise! I was shocked when DH didn't shoot it down. I can tell he doesn't want it for this LO (he's really sold on Scarlett), but I definitely hope to use it if/when we have daughters.

  • i understand she'd go by georgia, and if she hated clementine, well, that'd still suck. i wouldn't want my child to be ashamed of her name...along with the whole 'oh my darlin' clementine' ... and you don't think at some point in a child's life, at school in particular, no one is ever going to see her middle name, whether she wants them to or not? it happens. aaand i don't see what's wrong with allie jo...? also, i think i know traumatizing, m'am. i was called eveything, from the more obvious alabama, to bambie, bam-bam, bammer, bamarama, etc... not so much fun when you're being laughed at on the playground and people are being so mean you go home crying every day. yep, i know traumatizing.

  • So I told my bonus mom and Georgia Clementine, and she loves it. That said, your avatar clearly points to Scarlett, so that's my vote. :)

AGAIN, Bama is your FIRST NAME. That's what you had to go by. Now you can enforce going by your MN, but as a child that's less of an option.

I do think her MN could come up. But it won't come up often. It will by no means be the same situation you had. It's a MIDDLE NAME. I've been made fun of for my MN. Do you know how I figured out how to prevent that? I stopped sharing it.

I'm sorry you had a difficult childhood with an unfortunate first name. But this is not the same situation. I don't think Clementine is MN to be ashamed of, personally. And if it one day is for my child, it's hidden away as her MN.

Honestly, though, maybe you should focus a little less on my child's name and a little more on your own choices. You have Micah or Jacen. Which one are you intending for a girl? Because she either is getting stuck with on old biblical boys' name or a misspelled boys' name. Maybe before harping on me about choosing a unique MN that my child will be perfectly free to keep hidden or share, you should consider why your daughter might want her first name to be a girl's name. Or why your child of either gender would prefer that his/her name be spelled correctly.

Haha. I forgot I had her as my avatar! I love that movie. Scarlett is DH's clear winner, but I'm unwilling to commit this early in the game. However, it was the first name we discovered that we both really loved, so it might be a shoe-in. ;) We'll see.

oh, aren't you mature? i said from the beginning that i wasn't intending to be mean and/or rude. and it's Micah is if it's a girl, Jacen if it's a boy, it's green, obviously, because we don't know yet. i took the name micah from a russian woman that i met who had a baby named micah. yes, it was a little boy, but i know two girl-micahs. and jacen is for my SO's brother who was killed by a drunk driver when he was sixteen. we didn't want to name him jason, because our little boy would not be SO's brother. our LO would have his own identity, but his name could still honor his uncle. so we changed the spelling. i don't particularly like unique spellings either, but like i said, we want our LO to be his own person.

so yay for you or whatever for making it personal. i gave you an honest opinion, without intending to be rude, and you decide you feel the need to attack me. well, congratulations on that.

I'm not even going to touch that. I was merely pointing out the irony, because it is ironic. Giving a girl a boy's name as a first name is going to open her up to more ridicule than giving her an unusual female middle name. I know that from years of observation. So I'm going to leave you with a "thank you for your opinions," and sincerely hope that history doesn't repeat itself for your daughter.

I'm sorry about your SO's loss. That's a terrible thing to have happen, and it's great that you want to honor him. I would still suggest spelling the name correctly (or using it as a MN) to save your son a world of headaches in the future. Since you're clearly past the point of listening to me, I doubt you'll consider these suggestions, but what the hell, right?

  • Allie Jo- Sophia, Sophia, Sophia. My second choice would be Georgia. Love it!

  • I think Scarlett Anastasia is a beautiful name.  But even if you decide on Georgia Clementine, and if your DD ends up hating her MN, Georgia's still a great FN.  Growing up, I never really cared for my MN, but I know it means a lot to my mom, and I certainly was never traumatized by it.  Some other people I know just refuse to tell people their MNs--whatever works!  However, if my FN was Bama...yeah, I'd be traumatized.

  • Well I voted for Sophia Beatrice (because in my head I heard Sophie Bea and thought that was the darn cutest thing ever- hope you don't mind I used a little nickname there!).  But, I also think it's a beautiful name she can grow in to.

That being said- I really love Eloise Victoria.  You rarely hear Eloise!  So nice.  And- I am a fan of Georgia.  Big time.

After reading through most of the middle name discussion above, here's how I feel... I totally believe that middle names are super important- but very rarely heard.  Sure, they go on the birth announcement and the initials are used on monograms, but other than that, just not really heard.  I love LO's middle name and the flow of it and we just never use it.  I worked with kids for 5 years and never once heard any of them talk about another's middle name.  Just thought I'd share! It's like a NN for Michal (mih-KAHL), right? Is it pronounced like Micah, or more like mih-KAH? Just curious. BTN isn't helping me out at all with that....

I assume it's like Micah, 'cause that's phonetic. But then they don't have a pronunciation guide for Michal....Hmm.

Anyway...Sophia! I've really fallen in love with it. It's like DH and I flipflopped, 'cause it was his favorite for a while, and then he shifted to Scarlett.

Maybe it's a boy and this won't even be an issue. ;)

Eloise is totally my family's favorite. I have a sneaking suspicion it's twins (they run in my family), though it's too early to tell. If it's two girls, we've kind of decided it will be Sophia and Eloise or Scarlett and Eloise, because it's just so pretty and manages to "match" both of them.

With my luck, we're having one boy. :P

Let me see if I have this straight...

if you take the name Micah from someone who is living, you are spelling it the same, eventhough Micah is the wrong spelling, so it doesn't matter if your baby is an individual person...

but if you take the name Jason from someone who is no longer with us, you are changing the spelling, eventhough Jason is the correct spelling, because it does matter to you that your baby is an individual person?

I'm not trying to be mean or rude or anything. I'm just trying to understand your perspective.

  • I voted SS because I actually like the sound of Scarlett Beatrice the best!
  • I actually like Georgia Clementine the best, I think it has the most personality.  It sounds like a great character in a play or a novel.

I think you can make yourself crazy overanalyzing whether a kid will or won't like their name.  When I was a small child I thought Lauren was a weird name (I didn't know any other Laurens) and wished I'd been named Mary.   I know tons of people who have hated and changed their names - including someone who hated the name "Jim" so he changed it to "Tom." Go figure.

  • Al, I hope this doesn't offend you cause I can tell you're actually a little irked by the Bama chick...but laughing at all that has given me a much needed break from my paper so I thank you.

I like Scarlett Anastasia much better than Sofia. I like Sofia fine but it doesn't feel as "you" as Scarlett does. Plus I think it is just charming with your LN.

But it won't matter cause I know it is a boy. I know it.

  • I love, love, LOVE Eloise... I can't get DH on board with it, though. Eloise Victoria sounds lovely!

I think that Sophia Beatrice is my favorite out of two you have it narrowed down to for this baby... but, if it's twin girls you should totally use Sophia and Eloise.
