Kai surgery update and help needed from anyone in medical field

Kai had tubes put in his ears and had some scar tissue and gunk cleaned out of his ear drums today.  The whole procedure went SUPER fast and he took it like a champ.  The nurses were commenting on how happy of a baby he is, even post op!  20 mins after surgery, hes munching on Jello and cracking up at Yo Gabba Gabba.  So big relief that this is done and over with.  We find out on Jan 4th whether the surgery helped correct his hearing impairment.

Nurses and doctors - how do I take these electrode things off?  They are stuck on super tight and he won't let me pull them off.  TIA!

Re: Kai surgery update and help needed from anyone in medical field

  • I'm not a nurse or doctor, but rubbing alcohol may help. They used it on me in the hospital when removing the sticky thing they used to keep my IV in place. Glad to hear DS is doing good!

  • They have a gel on them so wait till he's asleep them peel them off. You can use baby oil to get the residue off.
  • The nurse took my daughter's off when she had the tubes in last week.  They also removed a lot of thick mucus from the ear drums-they said her hearing (although she never showed signs of hearing issues) is probably much more sensitive and that there is probably a big pressure difference in her head now.  poor kiddos!

Ear tube buddies!  Glad to know someone else who has gone through this so young! Most of the parents I talk to have kiddos who were 2 or 3 when they got it!

Kai aslo had a partially ruptured eardrum from an infection and it left some scar tissue they had to clean up.  He flunked a hearing test (his inner ears werent even registering sound) so Im hoping this will help him hear!

  • I'm a nurse, and when I worked in the hospital we used hand sanitizer alot to remove things that were sticky. It's not quiet as harsh as straight rubbing alcohol and has aloe so it helps loosen the bond!

I have spoken to a few people who had the tubes but in around this age as well and they have all said it makes a big difference. Scarlett has had 6 ear infections since she started daycare in July-every time she got any sort of congestion it went to her ears and she was spiking 103 fevers each time and miserable.  I hope this helps. Kai sounds a lot worse with the ruptured ear drum :(

I was sold before we talked to the doctor but when he told me she probably feels so much pressure in her head-like she is on a plane but can't swallow to relieve it that that is how she feels all the time.  I felt so bad for her when he said that. Makes sense-she was constantly digging her fingers in her ears-even when they weren't infected.  Some mornings we'd go in her room and her sheets would be all bloody from her digging in them.  The doc said after the surgery that the thickness of the sludge in her ears shows that she had constant fluid in there for a loooong.

I'm glad Kai did well post-op-Scarlett was pretty hysterical coming out of the anasthesia but after a little trip to the boob she was happy again!

  • Try any lotion,  Those patches are super strong.  You also could wait until you put baby in the bath and then use lotion or baby wash.  Good luck.
