  Have you ever had cabernet franc? I like it, it's pretty mellow but has a little bit of a bite, not sweet but not super-dry either, so it goes with a lot of different tastes. The last time I bought a bottle, it was right around the equivalent of $15USD.

  When DH went to our local wine shop to find a bottle for a gift and this came highly recommended. Clos de los Siete. I think it was around 20 dollars, though I can't recall 100%

  I like the Francis Ford Coppala red's - there's a nice blend that's very easy to drink for someone who's not a huge wine person.

  Ravens Wood makes some very nice wines at a reasonable price, personally I love their Zinfindel, but reds don't always go that wonderfully with cheeses if that's your goal.  The lighter whites like Rieslings, champanges, ice wines are more dessert-y and go well with cheeses.

  Vitiano Red Blend from Italy.....It's Cabernet, Merlot, and Sangiovese.... Awesome bottle for about $12. Or Ercavio from Spain.... Awesome.... Or 25/5 from Argentina.... All their red varietals are crazy good.... Chasing Lions from California.....It's mostly Merlot with some Cabernet mixed in..... If you want a Shiraz for yourself, try Strong Arms from Australia... It's like $12 and killer. I work at a wine shop, and personally love wine.

  I took wines in Culinary school and remember we had a riesling and a pinot grigo with Brie it was awesome.  I prefer big reds myself but sometimes they just take too much away from the cheeses.  Sounds like a winning xmas gift to me, wine and cheese YUM!

  Robert Mondavi is always my go to wine when I want to impress but keep it under $20.  The label is really nice and it is a great wine.  Good luck!

  This is an awesome wine from Italy that is usually between 15-20:

  Another good one is Masi Campofiorin, tastes like a baby amarone which is usually about $60 a bottle. I took it to a blind tasting and tricked everyone....plus the label is really neat:

  I love Coppola Claret.... and it looks fancy.  Can be more expensive depending where you buy it, if you have a big wine warehouse type store, or a BJs or Costco, you can generally get it for about 17 bucks...
