Pump, pump, pump it up

When is the best time to pump?  Also, what do you do with your milk?  I'd like to start freezing it but I don't know how much I can put in one bag.

Re: Pump, pump, pump it up

  • I pump 2x a day once in AM and once really late at night (1 am ish). I hear production is best in the early morning. I freeze my milk in 2-4 oz batches in the Lansinoh bags, they don't take up any space and are highly recommended.

  • I have tried the First Years storage bags, as well as the Medela storage bags...I like the Medela ones, as you can hang them off the breast shields, and pump directly into the bags.

I am about to try the Lansinoh ones.

I put about 2.5 ounces per bag.  I think you can comfortably put 5 or 6 ounces in the Medela ones?  I'm not looking at them right now...

  • First thing in the morning is the best time to pump. Does your LO take both breasts per feeding? If not, I would pump on one side while you burse on the other.

If LO takes them both, I would wait an hour after the first morning feed to pump.

I just put whatever extra I have for the day in a bag and freeze it. It doesn't make sense to me to freeze 2-4 ounces per bag. I usually do 6-9. And you can put whatever you feel like putting in there, but I wouldn't go over 9 because then your bag may not lay flat to freeze. GL!

You can get 5 ounces in the Medela ones. The Lansinoh are my faves...they are taller than the Medela bags so even though they only measure up to 6 ounces, you can put 8 or 9 in there.

  • I usually pump in the morning after LO eats. She usually only takes on breast at that time so I can pump the other side. I store 4-5 ounces at in the Lansinoh bags. I think I'm going to start pumping an hour or so after she goes to bed for the night since she's sleeping longer now.

  • I have the Lanisoh bags.  I read that you shouldn't add more fresh milk to what is already frozen.  Do you refrigerate the entire days milk, then freeze?

Yeah, you don't want to do that. Just stick it in the fridge until you have the amount you want to freeze. It's good in the fridge for about a week.

You can add fresh milk to frozen milk.  Just stick it in the fridge, so that it is cold before mixing in with frozen milk.

  • I pump in the morning and then late at night between 2-3 a.m. if LO hasn't woken up to eat.  When she takes a longer nap during the day, anything over 4 hours I pump, otherwise my breasts become really uncomfortable.

I generally freeze bags of 3-5oz - depending on how much I've pumped that day.
