Alabama Babies

ok, when did you start.......

table food with your LO?  I think I'm more nervous about this than her, I'm sure.  She already smacks/chews on baby food as if she's "eating" it.  And she already eats the gerber stage 3 foods.

also, she hasn't started crawling, she looks like she's going to try and gets frustrated and just rolls and rolls and crawls backwards!!!!  didn't know if I should be concerned or if it will just happen.

yes, I got my worry skills/habit from my mother and grandmother, great, huh?!!?!?

Hope everyone is doing well and happy thanksgiving!!!

Re: ok, when did you start.......

  • I think James was around her age when we started giving him table food.  We started with very small pieces of bread and then moved up to puffs, mum mums, etc.

Now he basically eats whatever we eat...just in smaller pieces (obviously!).

  • I was thinking she was ready b/c of the cues she gives me, but wasn't sure.  I guess I'm more nervous like I said.

She isn't crawling and didn't know if that mattered?!!?!?

    this.

  • Some of the prepackaged snacks will say that she needs to be crawling, but puffs and mum mums would be fine.

And once you let her try the food, you'll get the hang very quickly what she can handle.

As far as crawling, I bet she figures it out very soon.  James always gets very frustrated right before he figures something out.

ha Lydia too.  She goes backwards, or just rolls and rolls and rolls (and as you know we don't have that kind of room!!! LOL)

Ok, I guess I'll try some with her soon!!!

Thanks for making me feel better girls, esp since she's just slightly younger than y'alls cuties.

  • I'm glad you posted this because I've been wondering too!  It seems like everyone on 6-9 is feeding their LO table foods.  I feel so far behind but I'm just not sure she's ready for all that yet!  Do puffs melt in their mouths?  I'm so paranoid about her choking...

I'm the same way, paranoid about that.  Puffs, the yogurt things, etc all melt for that reason.

I was thinking I'd start all this with her soon.

  • I haven't read the other replies yet, but for us there was a time when we could just tell that he was really learning to "chew."  Mum mums were great, and of course he ate a ton of puffs.

Don't worry about crawling!  George didn't start until the day he turned 9 months.

  • We started with Aubrey around 7 months..she decided for us because she started completely refusing purees...so we didn't have much choice.  She did fine.

As for the crawling no biggie about it...Aubrey started crawling at 10 months.  I have had to tell myself thousands of times to not get worried about things because they do things in their own time.

you're right, so very true, I need to remember this more often!!!

  • Avery was about her age. She loved cheerios but hated puffs. Go figure. Good started foods can be fish, cottage cheese, puffs, cheerios, really over cooked veggies - broccoli and carrots. Don't worry about the crawling thing. Avery was totally off purees by ten months but didn't crawl until she was a year old.
  • I started Eli on table foods a few weeks ago when he started grabbing things off my plate.  I too am nervous about him choking and have stuck my finger down his throat once to get something.  And he wasn't really choking, just coughing and that would have gotten it out if I hadn't intervened.  Whatever I give him is small pieces (small enough for him to swallow if he doesn't chew them).  Things he eats now are the gerber carrot & cheese wagon wheel puffs and apple cinnamon stars, mashed potatoes, apple sauce that I make, cooked pears, mashed/cut up carrots, rice, cantaloupe, ritz crackers, toast, and mashed sweet potatoes. Lydia will let you know what she can handle.
  • Thanks everyone.  She ate some sweet potatoes and turkey at my family's for the weekend.  I also got her the puffs and yogurt things and she LOVES them.  I will ween her off the baby food and to solids as we run out of baby food :)
  • I'm super late on replying to this and trying to stop being so MIA...we started very easy regular food like oatmeal, grits, etc. when DS was around 6 months. He didn't do well with stage 3 food- he couldn't get that some was solid/some was not and always ended up choking so we just kind of skipped it all together.
