Anyone out there who is a vegetarian or vegan parent? I am vegetarian now but am taking steps to be vegan. I know OF a couple veggie parents with kids but aren't familiar with them enough to talk to them. How does your pedi feel about it or your family?
Re: Vegetarian parenting
Well, I don't think I would give in to personal cravings but I will research the fat and iron thing. I know that a vegan diet is cholesterol free and very low fat which may be great for adults but I'm not sure how it affects infants.
Thanks so much for the input.
I was raised vegetarian. My pedi when I was a kid told my mom that it is extremely healthy as long as you make sure you get all of the proteins and nutrients you need. I started occasionally eating meat during my late teens and continue to do so to this day. I think that I will most likely raise my kids as vegetarians (or partial if DH truly won't agree to full lacto-ovo-he was not raised veggie). I do find, though, that I almost NEVER crave meat. When I eat meat, I usually find that I don't really want more than a couple bites.
Everyone has their own diet that is right for them. As long as you make sure your kids get proteins and iron from other sources (nuts, greens, eggs-if you're not vegan), they should be fine. Talking from a diet perspective (not a moral one, which is often where vegetarianism stems from), eating some meat is perfectly healthy and how our bodies work naturally. We are omnivores. But you can be very healthy making the choice not to eat any meat!
