work trip - pumping concerns and flying with milk w/out LO?

Not sure how I?m going to get my pumping sessions in today and tomorrow.  I leave for the airport around 11am with my boss.  Our flight is at 1:20 and it?s about 2 hours.  Then we have a 3 hour drive, then dinner with our client.  Then we meet all day tomorrow with our client till be drive 3 hours back to the airport for a 7pm flight.

I hate drawing attention to pumping, but I think I will just have to tell my boss that I?ll need to take a couple breaks during tomorrow?s meeting.  And maybe find a mother?s room in the airport and try to squeeze a pumping session in there while waiting to board?  This sucks.

Also ? has anyone flown with pumped milk without LO?  I?m afraid I might get some trouble from TSA.  I think it?s perfectly fine if I?m traveling with an infant, but they might not understand that I need to bring milk back.  Should I just check my bag coming home?  That seems ridiculous.

  • I would pump right before you board, as soon as you land and after you stop from the roadtrip, then after the meeting and after the roadtrip back and before boarding again. And I would bring like a little igloo container with the cold packs to pack the milk in, it should be good for up to 24 hrs when packed on ice. Then just check the igloo container. If they will let you, I think that's your best option.

  • I'm not a BFing mother, so my advice may totally stink. But I would probably pump in the bathroom at the airport before your flight and after your flights. I'd also probably just pump and dump. Do you need that milk? Do you have a stash to get you through? If so, I'd dump it so you wouldn't need to worry about keeping it cool or going through security. GL!

  • Okay..I just did this in Oct- so you are in good hands with me.

It's no problem flying with BM- just make sure you have them in clear bottles/bags.  When you are at the security check point tell them right away that you have a pump and BM.  They might pull you aside- they did to me.  They opened the bottles and just waves a paper stick over them (like a ph looking thingy) and that's it.  They inspected my pump too.  And if your ice pack is all liquid they will take it.  If it's half fro half liquid you can still keep it.

Keep in mind- it's just one day- so don't stress too much but just try to pump as much as you can without becoming a nutcase.  I pumped less than I would have liked but it worked out just fine.

I?m thinking I should just leave my ice pack in the freezer here at work.  I have ziploc baggies to fill with ice for the way home.  I'd hate to lose the ice pack and since I?m flying down there with no milk with just the hope to use it on my flight tomorrow, they might be more likely to take it from me.

I do need to try to bring all the milk I pump back with me so dumping it isn?t much of an option.  My supply took a hit a couple months ago and I keep having to dip into my stash (it will be basically wiped by tonight and tomorrow since DH will need it for DD).  I can start supplementing with whole milk so it?s not a huge deal, but I?ve made it this far, I?d rather continue with BM till a year at least.  Good news is that I only need to pump every 5 hours or so these days, so I think I can do it even if it means pushing it up an hour or so for flexibility.

  • You should definitely pump when you can to keep your supply up. As for traveling back with the milk, I have no idea. You have a busy trip! Safe travels to you.
