Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone else have not-much-eye-contact during feedings?

I am lucky if I get one or two glances during a feeding. :*( She seems to prefer staring at the wall to staring at my face. DH thinks I am *grossly* overreacting. I need to know what other mothers are experiencing. Any of the baby books will say that baby is starting to prefer faces. I am not finding that to be the case. So please tell me your experiences.

My baby is just over 2 months old now, so I'm really looking for answers from moms with a 2 month old up to 3 months old...

  • i'm using the cross cradle hold, and LO just stares at the boob.  she is only 3 weeks old, so i don't know if it will change as she gets more aware.  it might make the experience a whole lot better if there was eye contact, but i'm just happy that she is eating and gaining weight.  try not to worry too much about it.

  • I'm interested to hear the answers to this, too. DS rarely glances at my face during BF.

  • My son is 11ish weeks. He almost never looks at me when he is eating. Mostly, he just looks at the boob/wall/anything that distracts him. Once in a while he looks up and smiles, but that is definitely more recent. To be honest, I don't spend much of my time looking at him while I'm nursing. I'm usually reading, on the computer, or eating.

When he's not eating, he definitely follows me with his eyes when I'm not holding him. Even if he is having a good time and I say something, his head whips around to find me. That has been happening for about month or so.

My LO is the exact same age as yours (yay for Fall babies) and she really doesn't make eye contact while eating.  During her other happy awake times she'll look at me or whoever has her.  I'm really not worried about it.

    Ditto this.

I actually asked my mom about this last night. She told me, and I quote, "Babies are selfish. They just want to eat. They aren't thinking about looking at mom adoringly to let her know they love her." DS has looked at me a little in the last 2 days while feeding, but we are having some nipple confusion lately. I think he's just looking at me as if to say "wtf? where's the bottle?" Crying

  • DD is just about 3m and she rarely makes eye contact.  She either has her eyes closed or stares at the boob.  She'll occasionally glance up at me and smile, but that's just been recently and typically only if I talk to her.

It was funny though, this morning I was on the couch feeding her and DH came over to stand by me and watch her for a minute, and she stopped eating so she could look at him and give him this nasty glare like "back the F off, cant you see I'm eating?!" :)

  • It took a while for LO to look at me. For a long time she just left her eyes closed, and later on liked staring at the wall like you said. Recently she has started looking me in the eye, but honestly I try not to look back at her that much. Maybe that makes me a bad mom, but when she's looking me in the eye she usually smiles with a mouth full of milk and stops eating. LOL ... Looking eachother in the eyes is just too distracting for her.
