December 2010 Moms

Not the way I wanted to start maternity leave... (vent)

I'm starting leave a day early because our house was broken into last night.  Instead of having a relaxing final few days, doing last minute things before the baby arrives, we're putting our house back together.

Not much was stolen (jewelry -including irreplaceable pieces from my grandmother- and cash), but our house has been trashed.  The door was kicked in.  Our bed was thrown across our bedroom and destroyed.  Clothes were flung everywhere.  Desk/dresser/filing cabinet drawers were pulled open and emptied on to the floor.  The cops think it was some druggie on foot supporting a habit, since nothing big was taken.  My laptop and digital camera were sitting out in plain site but weren't touched.

I know we're lucky more wasn't taken, but I'm so creeped out knowing some stranger was going through our things.  I'm frantically washing every square inch of the house.  My sister and her bf are visiting and have been a huge help picking up the pieces.  I was so nervous that I was going to go into labor last night (even the cop was convinced).  I hope I get everything cleaned before LO arrives.  His room was picked through but not destroyed like our bedroom.  I'm re-washing all of his clothes and sheets.

Ok vent over...back to laundry I go.  Hope you ladies have better start to the day!

  • OMG..that is terrible.  I remember my house getting broken into when i was in college.  It totally sucks.  Sorry that you have to deal with something like this so close to your due date.  I too would be so creeped out.  Good luck with getting everything back in order.

  • Oh wow. I am so sorry. My car got broken into one time and I felt so violated. I can't imagine how it would be if my house were broken into. Good luck getting things back together...

  • Oh no, I am so sorry you are dealing with this!!! Being broken into is the worst feeling. Our old apartment was broken into 4 years ago, I still remember the date - December 8. Oddly enough the date DH is convinced LO is going to arrive, and my Dad's birthday.

Good luck putting everything back together, what an awful thing to have to deal with right now. I'm glad you have some extra hands there to help!!

  • That's so terrible!  I'm so sorry.  You're right, the worst part is just imagining someone in your house, not really the things that were taken.  I'm so sorry you have to stress about this now...

If I were you, I would leave it to family and friends to put back together while you take in a movie.

  • Sorry that happened to you. That really sucks that some people think they can take whatever they want and trash other's things. I'm glad you have some help to get everything back together. Hopefully you will be able to get some time to relax before the baby arrives.

  • I am so sorry you have to deal with this!  I would feel so violated if I knew someone had gone through all of my stuff.  I hope your sister and her bf are helpful in getting your house put together.  You sure do not need any added stress right now, so hopefully you can get as much help as possible!

  • Ick, I am so sorry you have to deal with that.  It sounds terrible even if you weren't having a baby imminently!  I hope you are able to get everything cleaned up and that everything is just sunshine and rainbows from now on!

    This.

It was such a horrible feeling knowing someone was going through your personal belongings and I don't wish that on anyone. Hopefully this douche gets what he deserves! *HUGS*

  • Oh no, I'm so sorry.  I know what it feels like to have someone break into your house, and it's a feeling you don't shake quickly.  I'm glad you and LO are ok, and I'm glad you have family there to help you out.  I realize it makes me a bad person to think this way, but I always hope people who do such terrible things to others get it back on them 1000%.

  • Sorry that you're having to deal with this!  It would be stressful enough, without being 9 months pregnant.  Hopefully things get better and you can get everything cleaned up before LO comes.

  • Thanks for all the support and kind thoughts!  The cop told us the best way to prevent this is from happening again is to get a dog.  I've been looking at pet shelters online, but DH seems to think a newborn and a new dog may not be a good combo...He just might be right this time!  Guess we'll go with a security system instead.
  • I am soo sorry you have to deal with that! What a yucky way to start maternity leave, i'm glad you have people there with you to help out!

The cop is probably right, though.  When we sell our house, we'll probably have to get rid of our german shepherd (cause we'll be living in town with a MUCH smaller yard, most likely and I don't think she would adapt well after country living), but as much of a PITA that she is, she does make me feel secure.  You're not getting in the driveway, much less up the sidewalk/near the house without me at least knowing about it.  She's pretty intimidating.

  • OMG, I am so sorry. There is no worse feeling than having your home and privacy violated like that. I'm glad to hear that they didn't take too much. We have had a bunch of car thefts in my neighborhood and DH has been on my case to look into getting an alarm system for the house.

  • So sorry this happened!  I'm glad you have family to help but what a crappy and stressful thing!  Hugs!
  • I'm so sorry.  Having your house broken into is really awful, aside from the physical items being taken it's just very unsettling.

You mentioned a dog or a security system.  Here's what you need....sounds like a scary dog without having to clean up more poop.

  • Oh my God, I am SICK for you. What a pain to have to deal with that... especially right now.

I know you're thankful that it wasn't worse and that no one got hurt or anything, but it still is probably the MOST rant-worthy post I've ever read!

  • How scary! I'm glad you're all safe, though.

  • That's AWFUL!!!!!  Can you afford a house cleaner (like Merry maids or something) to come help you for a few hours?  It would probably be very worthwhile.  OMG, I feel so bad for you guys.  I hope they catch the jerk & give your DH 10 mins alone with him!  grrr.
  • Oh my goodness!  That is HORRIBLE!!  I'm so sorry you're going through this.  I hope they catch the guy that did it.
