Rec your carrier/slings/etc

I'm not sure if I want one or not, everyone with an opinion thinks I should register for some type of carrier.

I have a really bad lower back, that sucked pre-pregnancy, and just sucks worse now, so who knows what it will be like after LO is here.

Did you get a carrier/sling?  Which one? and would you rec using it or waste of money?

TIA

Re: Rec your carrier/slings/etc

  • I just bought a sling type thing from sevenslings.com.  I only had to pay shipping for it so I think it was worth it.  I only plan to use it if for some reason we are walking through a mall or something and she is screaming for food (like what happened at Bronners a few weeks ago).  However, if I had chronic back issues I wouldn't get that.  I still have to do some research on more substantial carriers so I'm curious to see what other moms think.

  • I have so many carriers it is kind of ridiculous. Here is what I have:

Baby Bjorn, Moby Wrap, Ring Sling, Mei Tai, and an Ergo Baby.

Why do I have so many? Because I LOVED my moby when Owen was little, and when he got too heavy for it I really was looking for something as comfy and easy to use. So I ended up trying way too many. Here are my reviews.

Baby Bjorn- HATE. I also had a bad back prior to pregnancy and this carrier made it 10 million times worse. I wore Owen in it one time for about 30 minutes, are never used it again. I also hate how babies dangle from their crotches. That being said, I have several friends who love and still use them. (FWIW, they all have girls that weigh MUCH less then Owen ever did)

Moby- LOVE! I recommend this thing to all new moms. It is a bit of a learning curve, but once you figure it out you will love it. I used this so much when Owen was little. It was the only way I could get anything done.  The only negative is since it is a woven material, the heavier he got the more stretched out the wrap would get when I wore him.

The Ring Sling and Mei Tai I don't think I can give good reviews on, because I never got to use them like I should. The ring sling I was never able to grasp how to get it on, and it killed my neck and shoulder. This is not the ring slings fault though, its mine. I have no idea why I never could figure it out. The mei tai I never used very much either. I don't really know why. By the time Owen could use it, I had another carrier.

Ergo Baby- Love this... it's the only carrier I am still using. I got it last December. It is very supportive without being too bulky. I can carry DS in it now with my bad back and it doesn't hurt. It is also fairly light weight. I think it is definitely worth the money, I wish I would have had it when Owen was smaller to see if I liked it. He was already over 4 months when I got it, so I am not sure how people with newborns like it.

Hope that helps a little. If you ever want to try them you could take a look at any of mine and try them on.  J&R joined me on my carrier obsession for awhile too, so she has a few others you could try!

  • We registered and have the Baby Bjorn.  I think we used it once.  Not because Lucas didnt like it or we didnt like it, it just isnt as convienent as a stroller :)

I never had the need to wear him around either.  He loved his swing and boppy chair so if I needed to do something around the small house that we have I just put him in one of those things.

  • I have the Oh Snap! from Baby Hawk and totally love it. I can barely feel it when I'm wearing DS around. It's similar to the Ergo but you can pick your own fabrics.

I love the way the Oh Snap! looks! I think it came out after I had my Ergo or I definitely would have looked at that one too!

Mary. another good place for carrier questions is actually the attachment parenting board on the bump. I used to just scroll through posts and read the babywearing related ones :)

  • I have a horrible back, spent close to 5 months in PT for it.  I have the baby bjorn carrier.  The one time I used it I had no back pain with it and really liked it.  However, my child hated the thing, so it never got used.  Oh wait, DH tried to put the cat in it.  I kind of regret not using it more because I think it would have been so much easier, but honestly for a while I completely forgot I had it.

Those Baby Hawk carriers are adorable. I have an infantino one I got from a M2M sale for $5...like Lucas, Sophie liked her other bouncer, napper, stroller, car seat etc. so we didn't have to look into carriers too much, plus our stroller was pretty convenient. The infantino is good for when she started to hold her head up, but I would look into something that was good for newborns as well - the infantino in my opinion wasn't - I would've liked the moby for that.

  • Thanks ladies!  I'll look into those suggested and check out the board on the bump.  This seems like one of those things, like a bottle warmer, where some need it and some don't.  It might be worth a shot.  I can add it to the registry and see if it gets bought :)

  • I loved my Baby Bjorn; we were lucky that it was the first one we tried and it worked for us. At one point, it was the only thing that would soothe my DD when she was fussy. Plus, my husband didn't mind wearing it.

My DD was small, so that helped. I also had back pain during pregnancy, and it didn't bother me too much with the Bjorn. Most of my back pain went away a few months after DD was born.

    Good luck!

  • Love the Moby for newborns; use Ergo all the time and love it. I have a horrible back and neither bothered me. One thing though, you can't use an Ergo with a newborn (until they have good head control) without an insert that's sold separately. I never liked the insert because it is very plush and I was afraid DS would smother his face in it.

ETA: I had a very fussy/colicky baby who was/is only soothed by being worn/carried. He's still like that. You can always wait to see what kind of baby you have if you don't want to spend the money. Carriers can be very
