Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How accurate was your growth u/s?

I had an appt today (I'm 35w2d) and LO was only measuring 5lbs 2-3oz ... So they are thinking he will be just over 7lbs at birth ... I just assumed my LO would be a 8-9lb nugget so I don't have much if any newborn clothes. so should I go buy some just in case? I have heard the u/s could be off by up to 2lbs, but the tech seemed pretty confident. How accurate was your u/s? TIA ladies!

Re: How accurate was your growth u/s?

  • I had an u/s the day I went into labour... they guessed 9lbs 2oz and my LO was 9lbs exactly. So pretty darn accurate!

  • About the clothes:

FWIW my LO was too tall for newborn sleepers (21.5 in), but fit into the NB onesies... so it's not all about weight! I wouldn't go crazy with the NB clothes right away though... you can always do laundry or have someone grab you some NB clothes if you're really needing them.

  • Get some NB clothes.  Both my children were over 8lbs and wore NB size clothes (specifically Carter's brand) for a month.  My DD is just now fitting nicely into her 0-3mos clothing.  So, even if you have an 8-9lbs baby, you'll probably want a few NB size outfits/sleepers.

  • Didn't have a growth U/S, but my MW said he would be 7.5lbs, and he was 7lbs4oz and 22".  I didn't wash his newborn sized clothes (all gifted), until we came home.  He wore NB clothes for a little over a month.

  • mine was dead on. that said - i would buy a few newborn things - my DD was 9lbs 3oz 21 inches and wore newborn - she is just now growing out of it.
  • yes, buy some newborn sleepers!

I had a growth u/s at 36wks due to GD and they estimated DD was 6lbs 8oz.  My dr said she was going to at least 8lbs and probably more, so they induced me on my due date so she wouldn't grow to big....well..she was only 7lbs 10oz when she was bornHmm. I had NO newborn sleepers and DD swam in the 0-3 sleepers. Don't go overboard, but at least have 3 or 4 newborn sleepers, just in case.

  • Totally off!  9 days before DS was born, he was estimated to be 9lbs11oz.  Two days before he was born he was estimated to be 10lbs.  As a result, due to my insulin-dependent gestational diabetes, I had a c-section.  DS was just under 8lbs 1oz.

  • They had some trouble with the scan because some of DS's measurements were off the charts, but they guessed 12 lbs, he was 10lbs 15oz.

Even though DS was so big, he STILL fit into some newborn stuff. Like pp said, onsies and carters brand stuff worked for us. I would definitely get a few things.

  • Same with me they said at my growth US that she would be about 8-1/2 to 9 lbs and she was 8lbs 8oz. And BTW I didnt buy any NB clothes because I was convinced she wouldnt fit into them and she did so I would get a few to tide you over so your LO isnt swimming in everything! GL HTH

  • Had my u/s around 36 weeks and he was 6.14, had him at 38.5 weeks and he weight 8lbs 7oz.  They say they can gain around a pound a week so I am guessing the u/s was pretty accurate, but I'm not positive.

I forgot to add that he is still in newborn/0-3 mth sleepers, so yes you should buy a few.

  • The day I went into labor the U/S said 7 pounds 1 ounce. She was born the next morning at 5 pounds 15 ounces. My U/S 3 weeks prior said 4 pounds 13 ounces... so that one was actually pretty accurate!

I did have a new U/S tech for the last one... maybe that had something to do with it?

  • I had an ultrasound at 31 wks, that said 5 lbs 4 oz, when E was born at 40 wks and one day she was 6 lbs 2 oz.  At the ultrasound they said she would probably be around 7 lbs, but she was smaller.  I def needed newborn clothes, but only for the first month.  Now she is over 9lbs!

  • Ours wasn't accurate.  At 39 weeks, DD was measured at 8 lbs 12 oz.  I had her at 40 weeks, 4 days.  So according to the u/s, she should have been close to 10 lbs by then.  She was 7 lbs. 8 oz.  DD outgrew newborn clothes because of length, not weight, and she gained weight quickly.  I think you should have some for the first month or so.

  • My last growth scan was 5 days prior to my induction. They estimated the twins at 7.13 and 7.8. They ended up being 6.12 and 6.1. It's just an estimate. Both boys were in NB clothing and dipes for a month.

  • My U/S 6 days before he was born said he was 8lb 8oz +/- 1lb.  Lincoln weighed 8lb 3oz when he was born.  He has a long torso which just fits into Carter's NB sleepers.  But the legs on some of them are too long.  We have 8 NB sleepers which gets us through two days typically.

  • At 32 weeks she was 4 lb, Dr. predicted 7-7.5. On due date, u/s measured 6.12. Born the next day at 7 lb 1 oz. So fairly accurate for me.

  • I had an u/s at 38w when I had my version, and they guessed 7lbs.  She was born a week later at 8lbs 1oz.

I'd get some NB stuff regardless, she was in it for the first month even though she was an 8lber at birth.

  • At 39w5d my lo was measuring 8 lbs and when I had him at 40w he was 8lb 5 oz. My lo was 22 inches long and could not wear any of his newborn sleepers. He can wear the onesies but no sleepers and came home in size 1 diapers. If you buy NB stuff keep the reciepts and the tags on them just in case.

  • In mid-July DS "weighed" 4 lbs, but was bigger than average (I was about 30 weeks). For my growth u/s on Sept 1st, they said he was just under 7 lbs. He was born Sept 20th at 7 lbs 10 oz. (I was expecting him to be at least 8 1/2 lbs. but he surprised me!)
  • I didn't have an ultrasound but 2 days before I gave birth, dr. estimated him to be at 8 pounds. He was 8 lbs 5 ox at birth. But I second what a lot of ppl said, have some NB clothes. Even though I had a big baby, he wore only newborn for at least a month. I was so surprised.

  • Sounds like I need to go shopping for some NB sleepers and onesies. I am still hoping the u/s is wrong, a 7lb baby seems so small and I'm already afraid of breaking him or something. First time mom jitters I guess. Thanks again ladies!
