I don't know about engorged but I remember a post on the BF board with several people saying they still leaked occasionally MONTHS after they stopped bf...so I would think it could definitely take more than a week to decrease production. Have you tried taking a decongestent that supposedly decreases supply?
Sorry your in pain. Have you tried the hot shower hand expression thing?
I happened to also see some herbs and tea designed to help just that at a health food store in santa cruz recently. Was from the same company that made the milk boosting tea I bought.

I still leaked a YEAR after my daughter was born and I NEVER BF'd her or did any expression.
If you're with Kaiser, call the advice line. I had a horrible experience weaning because I just thought it would dry up. It didn't. I was super lucky not to have given myself mastitis.
What worked for me was a full evening of rest and warm washcloths followed by a pumping session about once every 20 minutes. I didn't get a lot out, but the engorgement stopped that day. The pain stopped.
Have you tried the cabbage trick? It's quite normal to be engorged when you wean cold turkey. Even when one weans very gradually, you still produce some milk for weeks or even months (which is why, even though Aaron was down to only once a day, they scheduled my mammogram for 2.5 months after his last feeding).

LOL I weaned down to 3 feedings and did that for at least a month...then down to 2 feeds for at least 2 weeks then 1 feed for 1.5 weeks...was that too fast?? Do you have any other tips...I am so tender to the touch. It feels like somebody kicked my boobs ass. O think about nursing all hte time like day dream about it since I know it would bring so much relief
