Neocate? Modified Barium Swallow?

Is anyones LO on Neocate for formula? We had Mark's GI appt today and we are started Prevacid once a day(twice if that doesn't work) and are looking at switching him to Neocate. He is already on Alimentum due to Milk/Soy protein allergy and the Dr thinks he might need something even more broken down.

Also we are getting a modified barium swallow to see if he is aspirating food on top of all this has anyones LO had this done?

  • What are his symptoms??? He sounds similar to what Zoey was doing.

From what I've read though, the barium swallow doesn't tell you much b/c almost all babies will aspirate under stressful conditions (like eating barium)... but hopefully they'll figure out what's going on!

  • He spits up large amounts and is extremely fussy after eating and sometimes during eating he acts irritated and starts pushing the bottle out but acts hungry. He gags, coughs and chokes a lot and sounds congested. He almost always wakes up gagging or screaming after he eats.

  • We tried it a couple of times due to his milk allergy.  We didn't switch him from Alimentum because he was doing fine on that, it is expensive (I estimated we'd go from about $250/month to $400/month) and I was having problems getting good advice from the doctors and insurance company regarding how to get it reimbursed.  For example, the insurance company said it would be covered at a certain % if purchased from a par provider, yet neither the pedi or allergist sold it.  We would have had to purchase through Walgreens, which is par as a pharmacy, but it would pay under medical and Walgreens would not submit claims.  I'm pretty sure I could have paid out of pocket, submitted it myself and gotten it paid, even if I had to appeal, but I didn't want to since we didn't absolutely have to do that.

I have an unopened can that expires sometime in 2012.  We got it from the allergist.  If you want to give me your email, I can send it to you. Just this weekend DH said we should throw it out and I about died!  I was going to take it back to the allergist in about a month--it is so valuable!  The neocate website has info on reimbursement from insurance too.

  • We did the barium swallow when my son was 6 weeks old - but it wasn't to confirm reflux, it was to rule out pyloric stenosis.

He "fasted" for several hours and then drank the barium by bottle first thing in the morning (his test was at 7 or 8 am - very helpful).  He did surprisingly well - I was very wound up about the test itself, but overall it was pretty easy on us.  Then he pooped out white barium for a day or two and we all moved on.

Overall the test was much *less* invasive and disturbing than I expected.  Perhaps I was really expecting the worst, but I found it to be not that big of a deal.

That helps alot to hear! I think its scary when you don't really know what to expect and it doesn't help with them being so little!

  • yep, we went through all of the same stuff.  stella was on neocate for almost a year.  get ready because it's almost $50/can.  and she is still on prevacid & it like 1.5 years old.  sucks.
  • I?m not sure about the barium swallow test, but from the symptoms you?ve described it sounds like your LO might be having trouble breaking down the milk proteins in Alimentum. Since you mentioned your DS has MSPI, I would take the dr'snrecommendation about switching to an elemental formula (like Neocate). Since elemental formulas are 100% hypoallergenic and contain individual amino acids instead of milk proteins, they are the safest and easiest formula for LOs with MSPI.  Unfortunately,  as pp have mentioned elemental formulas are not cheap, but there is some great information on insurance coverage and/or WIC on the Neocate website.  Did your doctor have any samples to offer you?
