tacky or practical?

Re: cord blood registry

  • I'd love to store my cord blood but the costs make it not possible.  I am totally interested, however, in donating the cord blood and have started researching this as a possibility!!!

  • You are talking about asking people to donate to pay for it correct? I am not a fan of that idea.

  • we're not doing it. The cost is making it impossible for us

  • I agree that it's beneficial, but I think we are leaning toward not cutting the cord immediately, so our newborn gets the benefits of the blood before it is drained away.  We probably won't be banking it.

You can let the cord stop pulsating on its own and still bank the blood.

  • Ridiculous.

I haven't read anything not put out by a company trying to scam thousands of dollars that indicates banking is worthwhile. I will donate if I am eligible/able.

  • I thought so, but everything I have looked into said that there MAY not be enough blood left to bank.  I guess it just requires more research.  All cord blood banking is just insurance, anyway.

That is true. I specifically asked my m/w this and she said that they don't have to clamp it immediately, but I do know you get the most amount of cord blood if you do.

  • I should clarify. We have decided to bank our baby's cord blood. While it is expensive and we're by no means wealthy, we see it as an additional health insurance. Research is still being done, so who knows if this is a scam/trend or if it will really be saving millions of loves someday... either way we decided we'd rather have it than WISH we had it. It can be cancelled at any time (and then donated or destroyed.) But if you wish to keep it, you basically pay forever. There are numerous payment plans, etc. but they also offer a registry. People can donate to it, like they would for a honeymoon or baby's "college fund" (both i've seen done.)

I just don't know if it will be an "easy, feel-good shower gift" or if it's just tacky and seem like we're asking for money??

  • It's exactly like you're asking for money.

    Because you're asking for money.

Which you are then planning to throw away.

  • We're probably going to go with a public bank.  We can't afford to bank it privately (and I had wondered about some of the points addressed in the above article), but that doesn't seem like a good reason to let it go to waste instead of being banked where it might help someone else.
When it's all said and done, what matters most is your relationships with other people; without good friends and family, what's the point?

The article encourages public banking - and if there are really going to be lives saved, that's exactly how it will happen.

I think private banks prey on fear and the idea that if you really really love your baby, you'll give them a lot of money "just in case". Even though there isn't likely to every be a "just in case" that actually benefits that child.

  • I think if you wish to use a private cord blood and you could use some assistance paying for it, there is absolutely nothing wrong with setting up a registry.  The purpose of a registry is to indicate to your friends and family what gifts you particularly want or need.  Do not be discouraged from banking if you believe it may possibly benefit one of your children in the future.  There is no way to get the blood back later.

Clearly, it is not something that everyone believes in or buys into, but I agree with your plan and if a CB registry helps you get there, go ahead and do it.

  • I try to not make decisions based on fear.  I am hoping that I will be able to donate my cord blood.  My father died from leukmia three years ago and it would make us so happy to pass the gift of life on to someone in need.  I wish more people were aware of this option.
  • I wanted to donate the cord blood, but the hosp I'll be delivering at doesn't work with a public cord blood bank, and I just can't pay private collection prices only to turn around and give it away.
