When to back carry?

At what point do you feel safe using a back carry with your LO? I'm practicing both front and back carries with my Vat & a stuffed animal til LO comes. I've seen a few wrapping videos that show newborns in a back carry, but I was under the impression that they should at least have some head control. Or does it depend on which carry you're using (DH vs rucksack)?

Re: When to back carry?

  • The Didy, Natibaby, Storch, etc books all say to do back carries once your LO has good head control.  But, I know others who are expierence have back wrapped before that. You just have to make sure that your wrap is giving the head support your little one needs

  • I wasn't comfortable back-carrying until Baz could sit up on his own (about 5 months) and then only in the beco. But that was my comfort level (now I wrap him on as well as use the beco.) I started around the time of the first recalls because of smothering and I was majorly paranoid about not being able to see his little face and make sure he was breathing.

  • I think with a second LO I'd feel fairly comfortable putting them in a back carry after 2 months or so, since I'm comfortable with getting her up there and am confident that I could keep her head supported.

I didn't have anywhere near enough confidence to do it when she was a newborn, even with a spotter/helper.  We only really mastered a ruck within the last 6 weeks or so and I'm still occasionally having a hard time with a DH.

  • We started back carries when DS was a little over 2 months old. He had excellent head control, and I first tried with a spotter standing near the bed.

I've seen you tube videos of people doing back carries with a brand spankin' new baby, but I don't think I would feel comfortable doing that.

  • We tried today for the first time and failed.  She is 3 months old, very big with OK head control.  We'll try again tomorrow :)
  • I started wearing Grace on my back around 2-2/1-ish months.

I don't see much practicallity to putting a baby on my back, because they need down to nurse and be changed so often.  But if I had a toddler that needed a cuddle and the baby didn't want to be put down, I could see doing a quick NB back carry.

  • Thanks ladies. I'll admit, I was thrown off when I saw it. I think I'd be way to nervous about putting a nb on my back even if I was experienced.
