  • Nope, you'll be fine.  I was the same way.  Infact I HATE holding other peoples babies.  They seem so squirmy and floppy.  When it is your own you just know what to do.  Don't worry!  You'll do great!

  • Same here. I've played with tons of babies but never been responsible for one. Confused Sure hope it comes naturally cause I'm a bit freaked out at the reality of it all.
  • I'm sure you'll be fine!  Has your husband had any baby experience?  Did you take any of the hospital's baby classes?  I'm sure you'll get the hang of it quickly either way.

  • eh, I've babysat and nannyed for a living for the past 10 years and even I'm nervous.  the fact is every baby is different so even if you did have experience you'd have to learn all of your babies quirks anyway.. so really you're not as far behind as you might thing.  and I agree with PP just never ever be afraid to ask questions! of your nurses, your doctors, your friends, family, on the bump.  if somebody tells you your question is stupid just smack them and don't ask *them* anymore, but keep asking questions.  you'll do great :)

  • I keep telling DH that the baby stage is the easy part.  It's when they start getting mobile & talking back - that's where all the real trouble starts and we are ALL in for it!!  Indifferent  haha

I was thinking the same thing except for me substitute "newborn" for baby.  I babysat a baby I think starting around 6 months of age, but anything that is brand new?  Nuh uh.  I've never really held a newborn before, let alone have to do anything else that resembles care.

  • I'm with you on this. I used to babysit my cousin's kids when I was about 15, but they were out of diapers and I didn't really have to do much. MH actually just held a baby for the first time a few months ago and that baby was 5 months old. I was worried about it for a while, but now I figure there's no point in stressing about it. You'll be fine!

  • I could have written your post word for word.  I just keep reminding myself of all the idiots in the world that raise babies and keep them alive and well.  I think we should be in good shape.  Wink

That is the nice thing about being in the hospital for a day or two after. They kinda give you a crash course in training, and are there in case you need help!

This is pretty much what I am counting on.  Hopefully that and the crapload of reading I've done to give me some sort of clue what to do or where to start.  I'm lucky that my husband has baby experience.  I'm the only one of my friends and nearby family to have a baby so far....in fact, one of the last 3 babies I've held was my sister (who is now 26, yikes).

  • Don't worry, as long as you internet connection is stable at home you'll be fine! We have YouTube!!  I've found videos for swaddling, diapering, putting on baby clothes and how to use my baby carriers. Seriously, though, everyone I know says they feel totally incapable of caring for a newborn and they've all figured it out. We will too.Smile

  • I don't have a ton of tiny baby experience, either.  DH has waaaay more than me because he has a sister who is 15 years younger than him so he helped out a lot with her.  I just kind of hope I'll figure it out as I go along!  And of course, I'll take advantage of the nurses at the hospital before I leave and ask lots of questions.
