Curly has always been a really good sleeper and has basically STTN since he was about 8 weeks old. The last week or so, though, he's waking up once or twice every night, just SCREAMING. It's not his painful gassy cry, or his hungry cry, but it's a very different cry that I haven't heard before. I'll go in, pick him up, and rock him for less than a minute and he's fine and ready to go back to sleep. He never needs a diaper change or a bottle.
My only conclusion is that he's having night terrors. Are they normal at this age? Do you think that's what it is? Should I be worried about them and take him to the pedi?
Any advice you can give would really be appreciated. Thanks.
Re: Night Terrors?
Those actually sound more like nightmares to me, than night terrors.
Night terrors usually happy when a baby has missed a nap/excessively napped, gone to bed really late, etc. They usually happen 1-2 hours after baby has fallen asleep, and the child will be pretty much irate. Nothing will console them. The fact that he goes back to sleep in less than minute is what makes me think nightmare.
Peyton has night terrrors, which started around 5 months, which is not common at all (and she is now showing signs of sleep walking-which links with night terrors at a young age). However, she screams..for 20 minutes or so straight, like someone is cutting off her arm. She doesn't recognize me or DH and nothing calms her down.
Hope that helped.
Wow, I didn't know there was a difference! Thanks for filling me in.
So... should I be concerned about nightmares then?
