NBR: I don't know what the feck to do!

I woke up really early this morning (around 5) and couldn't get back to sleep.  I was looking at FB on my phone and noticed some hot Cyber Monday deals already going on so I decided to get up and check them out.

Well, shortly after I bought a few things, I apparently got some crazy virus on my laptop.  Sad  The really sucky thing is that this is the second time in probably less than a month for this to happen. Crying Last time DH took it into work and had the IT guy work on it (for a price).  I think DH is going to hit the roof when I tell him this happened again.  I didn't tell him this morning because he is really stressed with work right now.

I looked up the virus and there is a website that tells how to uninstall it, but I haven't tried it yet.  I don't know if I will be able to because when all this happened I immediately turned off my computer so that it wouldn't spread.  When I turned it back on after DH went to work, it won't let me past this message that I know if I click ok, it's going to wreak even more havoc.

So, should I bite the bullet and take it to Geek Squad?  What have you done in situations like this?

ETA: Does anyone have any experience with Geek Squad?  Cost?  How long do they take?

Also, the IT guy installed some anti-viral software when he fixed my computer but apparently this got through.

Sorry so long.  I'm stressed about this!  I still haven't backed up my files (all photos included) and I don't want to lose anything.

  • I think that I would take it in so I wouldn't lose anything.  Fingers crossed that everything will still be there.

  • You can always call Best Buy to see the cost about the Geek Squad - we had a really good experience when we took our laptop there. Sorry to hear about the virus - - there are a bunch out there right now. Hopefully you can get it fixed without spending a lot.
  • When you turn your computer on push F8 before it loads Windows.  Keep pushing it until it brings up a boot menu.  (If you miss it hold down the power button to turn the computer off and try again.)  Select boot in safe mode.  Then when windows starts up click Start --> Run and type "msconfig" in the box.  Under the startup tab uncheck everything and apply the changes and restart.  That will hopefully get rid of the popup box.  Then you should be able to run your anti-virus to remove it (do a boot level scan if your program allows).

    Do exactly this!

I had a bad virus a couple of months ago and I got rid of it by following these directions for starting up my computer, plus following the removal instructions specific to the virus.  I got it completely removed for FREE and haven't had a problem since.

Good luck!  Computer viruses are nerve-wracking!

I tried doing this and once it reboots in supposed safe mode thinkpoint (the virus) comes up. Any suggestions? Otherwise I'm going to wait for DH to get home and try it after Caroline goes to bed. If that doesn't work I guess I'm off to geek squad iin the morning.
  • Okay, try starting up your computer and press Ctrl+alt+del as soon as the thinkpoint screen comes up.  Go to the task manager and kill anything called 'hotfix' or 'thinkpoint.'  Then go to new task and type explorer.exe.  That should get you to your desktop.  Then download https://www.malwarebytes.org/ free version and run a scan.

Still didn't work. :( I was able to end hotfix, but there wasn't thinkpoint to kill. After I ended hotfix, I don't have a way to close the pop up window. GeekSquad looks like it will be at least $150! Waaah!
  • I'm sorry! If I lived there I would work on it for you!  Do you have any technical friends?  Geek Squad likes to delete everything and reinstall windows as their "fix" for everything -- don't let them do that!  It's not necessary and you'll lose everything!
  • Also, I'm not sure which version of Windows you're running but some of them automatically create restore points.  You could try the F8 trick and see if there's an option to restore to an earlier time.  You'll lose everything that you've done since then, but it might be worth it.
  • Thanks - I really do appreciate your suggestions. DH is going to check with his IT guy and see if he'll help us out again.
