Over the counter prenatal vitamins

I just finished my samples of prenatal vitamins and ins. doesn't pay for Rx vitamins. Wondering the best prenatal over the counter vitamin:)

Re: Over the counter prenatal vitamins

  • If you still have some of the boxes, compare the ingredients from the box to the ones at the drug store. I know folic acid is very important, but there's other stuff in there too you don't want to do without.

  • I used the One a Day Women's Prenatals with added DHA when I was pregnant with DD and liked them.  The DHA makes them a little more expensive but to me it was worth it.  (there are also some DHA supplements you can add to your regular prenatal without buying the combo pack.  That's what I have now because my OB has me on a specialty vitamin that doesn't have DHA)
  • I've never had mine covered and I usually use brand name Materna but if you look at the ingredients in the generics, they're likely the exact same!!  Often the brand name uses different fillers (to keep the pill in a pill form etc) so unless you have allergies to a specific ingredient, the generic is likely fine.  When I worked as a Pharm. Tech., most RX plans only pay for the generic unless there is documenation from your doctor that you CAN NOT take the generic and must have the brand name!! Hope this helps!! :)

  • I've been taking Target prenatals since I found out I was pregnant with my DS. No problems at all and my doctor actually recommends them.

  • Both my RE and OB suggested Target brand...they work great!

  • I'm not sure where you live, but Meijer does prescription prenatal vitamins for FREE. I bet other pharmacies do something similar, they are always advertising $4 and $10 generics around here.

  • I take a generic brand of them from our grocery store (HEB). They're great, don't make me sick, and best thing: only $4 a bottle.

  • my OB prescribed me to a brand that's $50/ month - insurance barely covers it so I asked him if I could take over the counter to save on costs- as long as it has folic acid and DHA, he says OTC is fine.

I'll be changing over to GNC's prenatal program, which is half the price per month.  I just hope my stomach can take the new vitamins...

I was going to suggest this too...I believe Wal-Mart also does this.  Just get a RX from your doc and they can fill them for free.  If not, I use the flinstone complete and just take 2 along with DHA.  I had some trouble getting the free ones down!  I also liked the women's one a day prenatal.

  • My dr. said no because they don't have enough iron in them. Other doctors disagree. I'd ask yours.

  • I've been taking Belly Bar chewables.  I think they are like $4-$6 a bottle.

  • With my first pregnacy I brought my vitamins to my OB for him to check. He said that there was WAY too much stuff in 1 pill and I'd be getting way more than needed. He told me to get RiteAid brand ones. I used them for the majority of my 1st pregnancy and so far with this one.  I wish I remember the 1st brand I had. I got it from WalMart.

  • I've been taking the Target brand for both pregnancies $10 a month and that is for 2 pills a day. (1 pill is the vitamin and 1 pill is the dha/fishoil one) My doc said almost anything is fine as long as it has the right stuff in it.

  • My OB just says to take anything you can get down.  I have trouble with nausea and swallowing pills, so I like these, and I actually take them!

  • Make sure the folic acid amount is, I think, 700mg. Compare that to your box you had. I bought the chewy ones from Target, and my OB said they were just fine. And they taste good!

  • Nature Made Prenatal Multi + DHA softgels have been great for me. Sundown Naturals made me so sick.

  • With DS I took the ones from Walmart since they didn't irritate my stomach, but this time they seem just too big for me to swallow so I am taking the Target brand gummy ones.

  • I used the One a Day Prenatals w/ DHA for the first 60 days or so, but the DHA made me really nauseous. My OB said I didn't have to take them. So, I started taking the Walgreen's version which is almost exact to what I was taking sans DHA pill.

I started taking these because I was having trouble with the One A Days, until I was told that they don't contain any iron which really concerned me.  These are good otherwise so you may just want to talk to your doctor about an iron supplement or making sure you are getting enough in your diet.

I switched to the Target brand PN and added a DHA supplement.

  • I referred to a recent Consumer Reports article. It listed half a dozen that were fine and included the min/max amounts of the necessary vitamins and minerals for checking. I ended up with the CVS store brand.
