Braxton Hicks Vs. The Real Thing

Okay ladies. I have been having contractions this morning.. how do you tell the difference between braxton hicks and the real thing? I have been having one about every 15 minutes.. it's quick, only lasting about a minute or less. I've been drinking plenty of water, so it's not being caused because of dehydration.. Any thoughts or helpful advice?

Re: Braxton Hicks Vs. The Real Thing

  • I don't know about telling the difference between BH and the real thing as this is my first but I've been dealing with BH throughout my pregnancy.  My doctor said I should be concerned if they last for more than four hours or start getting closer together.  It probably wouldn't hurt to call your doctor though.  Good luck!

  • Sounds like Bh but you should call your doctor if you have 6 an hour.

I get them very regularly and have talked to my Dr. about when I need to go in. Mine feel like a lot of pressure and my belly gets really tight. They last about 20-30 seconds and I've only had up to 3 per hour but that is not consistent. Last week when I talked to the nurse she said (and an ultrasound confirmed) that what I'm having is not doing anything (changing my cervix) but if they got to lasting 45 seconds or longer or had 5 or more an hour they would start changing my cervix so I'd need to tell them right away.

I would recommend you drink a bunch of water and lay down on your left side and then time them. Literally time how long they last, how often and after a couple of hours call your dr and tell them what the results are and take it from there.

Good luck -  I know how unsettling it can be.

  • my dr told me to call if they were 15 minutes or less apart. it's probably nothing but you should maybe call and let them know what's going on especially if it has been happening for several hours.

  • Thanks ladies for the advice! I wrote down the times.. They went on for about an hour (That I had actually timed), about 15 minutes apart, but stopped after that.. Could they be caused because of something you ate? I had ate maybe 30 minutes before they started.. Started about 8:30ish.. My last one was at 11:30. I hadn't been writing them down or timing them in the morning because they were maybe half hour apart. When I noticed they started closer together I wrote them down, and within an hour they were over. I drank a lot of water this morning, because the last time I was having some my doctor said they could be coming from dehydration. I drank lots of water all weekend, so I'm sure I wasn't dehydrated, but drank lots to make sure..

Anyways, thanks for the advice.. I'm definitely going to be calling tomorrow if it continues, but for afternoon, I haven't had anymore!

    Thanks again!
