How early can you see/hear heartbeat?

Hi everyone,

This is my first pregnancy and I am going for my first ultrasound tomorrow.  I am just wondering how early you can usually see or hear a heartbeat in the ultrasound. I am 7 weeks 3 days...is it likely that I will be able to see or hear it?  Thanks!!!

Re: How early can you see/hear heartbeat?

  • U/S can detect a heartbeat from around 6 weeks but not always. at 7 and a half weeks there is a good chance you will see babys heart beat at your scan :)

  • We saw the heartbeat at 6 weeks, 2 days so you will most likely see it. With my DD they turned on the sound and I was 7 weeks 3 days and I heard/saw it.

  • in my experiences you can see the HB as early as 6w, but we are still unable to hear ours until much later b/c i have a very tilted ute so my babes live way in my back for the first few months...

  • I'm going next Monday for my first ultrasound and they said that they will probably hear the heartbeat next week. I'll be 6 weeks and 2 days on Monday. I hope we hear it!
  • Thank you for the replies!  I hope we are able to hear it..the waiting is soooo tough!!!  I went for my first appointment this past Friday, and they initially told me the first ultrasound appointment was December 16th!!  Luckily they found an earlier one so I can go tomorrow...waiting till the 16th would have been torture!!
  • My Dr's office says definitely by 8 weeks... the baby is so small that they don't want to scare you if they can't find it at 6/7 weeks (it might be there just not come up on the US)  (my last PG was 7 weeks 3 days and they found it, but with a previous PG I was at the same time, and they didn't get a heartbeat until the following US)  They always say not to worry, but that was the longest 4 weeks of my life....
  • We saw a definite HB at 6w2d.

  • I went to the ER this weekend at about 5 weeks 4 days and ended up having a u/s (I was spotting alot). We were able to see a flicker of cardiac activity in the screen and hear it too. I hope you get to see that. It's very comforting.
  • So we went to the dr. today, and according to the ultra sound...I am only 5 weeks, not 7 weeks 4 days as the doctor had originally thought.  So needless to say, we couldnt see a heart beat today.  I guess we will be going back in a few weeks!  Still good to see something on the ultrasound!!
