Anyone ever had issues with their Gallbladder?

So I'm not sure if it's my gallbladder or not, but I have been having this pain underneath my right rib for the past month or so along with lots of bad heartburn. It comes and goes, happens alot after I eat. My mom had her gallbladder taken out many years ago, and she said those were her symptoms too. It's not a sharp shooting pain, or nothing that itsn't bearable, so I don't know if I should go in to be looked at.

I'm the type of person who doesn't go to the Dr. unless I am truly sick, so I don't know what to do here? See if it gets worse or go in. Has anyone had problems with their gallbladder or had it taken out? What were your symptoms?

Re: Anyone ever had issues with their Gallbladder?

  • Yes, I have a major problem with it during pregnancy.  Those are definite symptoms of it, but they are also symptoms of other things as well.  You want to call your dr.  I also have crohn's disease and I walked around with a pain like that for two months until I ended up in the hospital with 105 degree fever and very sick.  Just go get checked out :)

  • I had my gallbladder removed 3 years ago.  My symptoms were similar, I would usually wake up with pain in that area.  It got really bad - to the point where it was sharp shooting pain that was comparable to labor pain!!  I ended up going to the ER one day b/c I couldn't deal with it anymore (this was about 9 months after the pain first began!).  They did an ultrasound and found gallstones and decided to remove the gallbladder.  The surgery was super easy and I only have one tiny scar by my belly button.  I was at home walking around the same day.

    Definitely get it checked out!

  • Never had a single issue until I was PG. My doc told me that the hormonal changes can have an effect on the gallbladder. I had mine out when LO was two months old- mine was really bad during pregnancy, and they actually debated taking it out while I was still PG.

Mine was extremely painful when I ate anything fatty- I was on a ridiculously plain, low-fat diet for months. One thing that I was told could help was drinking LOTS of juices of different fruits- I drank blueberry juice, raspberry juice- all the $$ juices in the produce section of the supermarket.

      Hope you feel better!

  • never had an issue until after I had my son.

I had the same symptoms... heart burn, pains in the ribs, then stomach pains. It got so bad that I would take a bath and it even gave me a panic attack. I finally couldnt take it anymore and went to the ER. they took my gallbladder out that day.

I also waited so long that a stone went past the duct and went to my pancreas... so I had to have another surgery...

Dont wait!! Go to the DR!

  • Echo PPs...go get it checked out!  My sister just had hers removed this summer after literally YEARS of thinking she was having psychosomatic responses to stress.  She ended up in a Berlin ER when traveling with her friends through Germany.  NOT fun.
  • PLEASE....like PPs said, go get it checked! I hesitate to tell you my story because I don't want to freak you out (because what happened to me is pretty rare), but I want to impress upon you the seriousness....so here goes.

I was 19 when I had mine removed.  I had horrible pain when I would eat fatty foods and just generally got sicker and sicker.  It got to the point where it was constant, even without eating.  I was in college, so I kept blowing it off.  The final straw was when I took to sleeping in a reclining chair because I couldn't lay out flat on my bed.  I went in for testing to check my gallbladder's functioning level and it took them 2 hours to get the die into the organ.  The duct between my liver and gallbladder was nearly blocked completely.  When my surgeon removed my gallbladder, he came out and told my parents that I actually had gangrene--it was THAT infected.  He told my parents and I that if I had waited another week to have it removed, I would have died.

I spent the next month on antibiotics and my recovery was much worse than if I had just gotten it taken care of when it started to bother me.  My surgeon told me to NEVER "blow off" something that my body was trying to make that obvious to me, ever again.

If you'd like to know what to expect from surgery or testing, send me a PM.  I'd be happy to talk to you about what kinds of tests I did.
