christmas poll

Read an article this morning on the most popular toys from back in the day and started to reminisce about my Cabbage Patch Kid, so thought this would be a fun way to lessen the pain of being back at work :)

1. What was the best gift you received as a child?

2. What was the best gift you received as an adult?

3. What is your best holiday memory from childhood?

4. What is the one present you wanted as a child that you never got?

Re: christmas poll

  • 1. What was the best gift you received as a child? Probably my first cabbage patch kid the year they came out, from my grandfather, who always spoiled us on christmas.2. What was the best gift you received as an adult?  my engagement ring!3. What is your best holiday memory from childhood? in 7th grade, I really wanted a green leather jacket, and asked for that for christmas.  We'd opened all of our gifts and I was really happy with my haul, but then my mom said "oh, there's one more for you that I forgot" and made me go look in her closet, where I found the box with my green jacket.  I was so excited.  We never snooped around for gifts so I had no idea that it was there.4. What is the one present you wanted as a child that you never got? I need to think about this for awhile.  I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

  • 1. What was the best gift you received as a child? - I got a Christmas barbie one year... she had a green dress and was GORGEOUS.  I still have her... in the original box, never played with, because I wanted to keep her.

    2. What was the best gift you received as an adult? - H took my grandma's diamond dinner ring (from the 50/60s timeframe) and had it converted to a necklack (wearing it today actually).  I love this thing.  I don't wear big rings, so having it as a necklace was the best.  I wear it everytime we get dressed up for something and now that Eli is older and not pulling on it, I am going to start wearing it everyday.  My grandma was the person I went to with crushes and disappointments, instead of my mom who didn't get along with me at all.  I miss her so much and if I ever lose this necklace I might bawl like a baby!

    3. What is your best holiday memory from childhood? - I always loved getting in grandpas old beat up pick-up and driving up onto the hill of their 30ish acre plot and finding the perfect Christmas tree.  He would chop down whichever one my brother and I picked and drive it down to the house to decorate.  One year we picked a tree that I kid you not was so big, we chopped it into thirds and gave the other two pieces to neighbors to use as their trees and the thing still was so tall we couldn't fit the angel on it until he chopped a little more off the top!  Grandpa didn't say a word either, but he had to know that tree was taller than the house when he chopped it down... but it was what we wanted and therefore the tree we got.  LOL

    4. What is the one present you wanted as a child that you never got? - Considering my family barely had enough money to keep our house, I was just happy to get presents each year and tried not to get my hopes up about anything.  I know there were always toys that other people had that I never got that I really wanted.

  • 1. What was the best gift you received as a child? It's a tie between the year we got Nintendo and the year I got the astronaut Cabbage Patch Kid. Nintendo was awesome, but I loved that doll. Her name was Maddie Jesse and she had braids and a space suit. My grandma bought her for me and I still remember wondering what it could possibly be because the box was rocket-shaped and she obviously struggled with the wrapping :)

    2. What was the best gift you received as an adult? C isn't a huge fan of NYC, especially at christmas, but the year I was pregnant we spent the 23rd and 24th in the city doing all of the touristy things. We saw the windows, visited the tree, walked through the park, and had a phenomenal dinner at Bobby Flay's.

    3. What is your best holiday memory from childhood? If I had to pick only one, I guess I would say that it was the christmas after we moved to Ohio. Once we were all out of the Santa stage, we adopted the tradition of opening gifts on christmas eve and then sleeping in on christmas morning and having a huge breakfast. I was 14 and really homesick - Christmas was a BFD for my massive family and it was the first time I was away from my extended family for the holiday. We opened our presents and then went to bed. My dad woke us up at 3AM and told us to get dressed and get in the car because we were going home for christmas. We drove all day and had doritos for lunch because nothing else was open. We finally got to my aunt's and surprised them right as they were sitting down to dinner. The look on my grandma's face was priceless. I'm tearing up just thinking about it now!

    4. What is the one present you wanted as a child that you never got? I always wanted an Easy-Bake Oven but it never appeared under my tree. I blame that for my lack of cooking skills.

  • 1. What was the best gift you received as a child? Nintendo, hands down!

    2. What was the best gift you received as an adult? H got me a notebook computer last Christmas. That's definitely been the most useful! Although I think my favorite is the Wii he got me when I got my Masters (I graduated on 12/20/08.) I didn't know he was going to get me a graduation present, and he knew I wanted a Wii soooo bad. He put it under my pillow and I was seriously so tired that I laid down in bed without even noticing it!

    3. What is your best holiday memory from childhood? I was probably 8 or so, and my family and my parents' best friends (who are basically like my aunt and uncle) went driving around forever looking at lights and singing every Christmas carol we could think of, and we stopped at McDonald's for pizza (back when some of them had pizza!) That, and my mom and I used to play Monopoly on Christmas Eve every year.

    4. What is the one present you wanted as a child that you never got? Barbie's Ice Cream Shoppe!!! I don't know why, but I wanted it soooo bad, and my mom wouldn't get it for me because she said I'd make a mess. :)

  • 1. What was the best gift you received as a child?  The most memorable gift that comes to mind is totally rad purple boombox :P

    2. What was the best gift you received as an adult?  My parents took us to alaska on a cruise with them.

    3. What is your best holiday memory from childhood?  I really have THE worst memory.  I can barely remember a thing (besides my purple boombox, apparently :P).  I do remember one christmas showing up at my grandma and grandpa's house for christmas and they weren't there.  It turns out they thought they were coming to our house, and we thought we were going to their house :P

    4. What is the one present you wanted as a child that you never got?
My sister and I always asked for a video game system, but my parents refused to ever buy us a nintendo, gameboy etc.  Now i thank them for that because I am sooo not into video games, and I just find them a time waster for the most part, and I'm glad I don't suck up my time with them!

  • 1. What was the best gift you received as a child?
Going back to those American Girl dolls, one year I got the Samantha doll and my very own matching sailor outfit to go with hers. May not have been the best gift ever, but I always remember it.

    2. What was the best gift you received as an adult?
DH and I took our honeymoon to Hawaii over Christmas the year we got married, it was also our Christmas gift to ourselves. It was amazing, and even better since I didn't have to worry about my family drama over the holidays!

    3. What is your best holiday memory from childhood?
When I was about 7 (siblings were 10 and 4), our neighbors dressed as Santa and Mrs. Claus and came over on Christmas Eve. At that point I didn't believe in Santa, but my younger brother still did. I just remember having such a fun time. That, and every Christmas Eve we got to open one small gift. That's one tradition I hope to continue.

    4. What is the one present you wanted as a child that you never got?
Anything electronic - game boy, atari, nintendo. We didn't even have cable until my parents divorced and my dad moved out! He was so against the TV (not necessarily in a bad way), we never had any of that stuff. I was always so jealous of my friends who had all that stuff.

  • A little late on this one...but here goes:

    1.  Best gift as a child:  Either the gold necklace my parents gave me or the leather jacket they gave me one year.  I actually knew I was getting the school jacket (I picked it out), but they dooped me.  They wrapped it inside a large tupperware bowl.  So I had NO idea what it was when I opened it.  Those are the ones I remember.  The nintendo was cool too.

I know I loved my care bear the year I got it, and absolutely adored my cabbage patch doll, but I don't remember those Christmases very well...

    2.  Best gift as an adult- dh and I got engaged on 12-21 (just before the nasty snowfall in 2004).  Anyway, the stones in my e-ring are from my grandmother's wedding ring that she acquired during the Great Depression in exchange for photo services (they were in the photography business and a good friend was in the jewelry business).  So anyway, I had already given him the ring to get reset, but I was really nervous about resetting that ring.  I did not want to destroy the heritage of the ring.  However, the original ring was really fragile and would need a lot of work for me to be able to wear it daily.  So after a good month of debating this one, we decided to get it reset.  I gave dh the ring for him to reset into a more modern style and he kept it from me for 3.5 mos (oh the waiting!).  Anyway, when we exchanged gifts on Christmas Eve, my last gift was in a jewelry box.  The last thing I expected that year was more jewelry as we had just gotten engaged.  Well, I opened the ring box to find my grandmother's ring with stones in it.  DH had that ring reset too... with cubic zirconium.  So even though I don't wear that ring daily, I have a ring to help maintain the integrity of the original ring.  His thoughtfulness in helping me maintain my family's history as well as begin a new history still brings tears to my eyes.  Nobody has ever done anything that nice for me, and I still can't believe I found someone like that.

     3.  The year my parents hired a dress up Santa Claus for a Christmas celebration- it included my 2 sisters, my brother, and 2 other families- all with kids.  Instead of "Santa Claus"  they got Santa's "helper" dressed up in a very small Santa suit.  Um, yeah, she wasn't expecting 10 kids waiting for Santa...  Apparently she was a good sport about it, but I still remember the Christmas Eve visitor.

    4.  Hmmm....  This is a toughie because my mom was the MASTER.  She could find anything... she found Care Bears the year they were THE gift.  Cabbage Patch Kids?  She got those too.  Nintendo with power pad?  Yep.  Nintendo 64?  Yep.  The Cabbage Patch kids make for a great story too... she actually found on the internet in 1983 a secret number for the Care Bears folks to try to find them too..  they were stunned she got the phone number and was able to find out that a shipment would be arriving at the local K-Mart in a few days... she and her friends were the only ones there before the store opened to make sure they got their Care Bears.  So yeah, unless a horse counts, I don't think there's anything I really missed.

I totally had that.  You weren't missing out on much.  I think we made ice cream with it once because it was such a PITA.
