Trying to Get Pregnant

DHA vs Omega-3 Fish Oil

During my last visit with my GYN, I told her we were about to start trying. She suggested I start taking a DHA supplement in addition to my PNV that I'm already taking. She said it's needed when you get pregnant but is good to start taking now so you can get used to it (aftertaste and such). Now I'm confused... what's the difference between DHA supplements and Omega-3 Fish Oil supplements? I tried google, but it's just confusing me. What do you take?

Re: DHA vs Omega-3 Fish Oil

  • My OB said it was fine to take OTC Fish Oil capsules as a DHA supplement, as long as it was purified to eliminate mercury.

  • I've been taking the DHA that comes with my PNV...the after taste isn't as bad as the omega-3 pills (IMO) but it sometimes makes my tummy funky.

  • My psychiatrist, who tends to be a bit intense, told me that many women prefer to take a plant-based DHA supplement when pregnant instead of fish oil...I think because of mercury concerns. I don't really think it matters, but I recently switched to plant-based when I saw them next to the prenatal vitamins at Target. I usually take fish oil though.
