  • Didn't do it to me.

  • No one shaved me before delivery.

  • Nope. They didn't shave me.

  • I know they did back in the day (50's 60's 70's) but I haven't heard of anyone saying this recently and it certainly didn't happen with my previous births-- but I'm always cleaned up down there anyway!
  • It's an old school policy and not normally done anymore. It all depends on the facility you deliver at.

  • Not with my first, and damned if I am going to let anyone shave me before birth this time either.

  • Depends on the facility and/or physician. I am currently doing OB nursing clinicals at a hosp in NYC, and they shave everyone. Classmates at a different hosp have told me the hosp doesn't require it, but some physicians want all of their patients shaved.

  • Not to me.  I don't think they do that anymore.  My mom said she had to fight it.  She apparently likes her bush.
  • VERY old school. I would venture to say 99% of hospitals no longer do this.

HOWEVER I was shaved at the top of my public line for my c-section. Barely at all.

  • Most of the doctors that I work with don't always ask that women be shaved when they are laboring, however,  there are some that prefer if there is an "excessive" amount of hair, that it be shaved.  Also If you're going to have a C-section, it's standard procedure to shave before surgery.

  • Didn't happen to me.  I had heard that too, so I asked about it last time. My practice doesn't do that - just ask at your next apt - it would be nice to know ahead of time :-)

  • they did not fully shave me but shaved the part where they did the c/s
  • They used to do that routinely but that practice has mostly gone extinct.

You get the top of your pubic area shaved if you have a c/s though.

  • I was never shaved with my 2 children.
  • I watched a birthing video and noticed the woman was shaved.  So I asked my BFF about it and she said she wasn't shaved.

I have to say, I would prefer NOT to be completely shaved.  The last thing I want is to not only have to heal with potential stitches, but also to have the itchy growing back feeling!!

I WILL however be sure that I'm trimmed down pretty well beforehand so as to not provoke the doc to shave me.

  • haha, my mom has a funny story about this, she went into labor with my brother ( in 1977) 7 weeks early, they originally went to the local hospital where it was normal still to shave before delivery, then her Dr. came in while they were shaving her and said no no, she needs to get to the hospital in springfield where they can take care of a baby born that early, so they stopped shaving her and they sent her to the other hospital where they do NOT shave you before delivery, so she showed up to the other hospital half shaved! she was so embarrassed!

  • I was never shaved (although i keep myself trimmed while pg) and i don't think I would let them. Thats a bit to much involvement on the Dr's part. IMO he/she is there to catch the baby not critique my vag hair.

  • They shaved the top of my pubes before my C-section bc that is where they made the incision.

  • With my DD they didnt....my second pregnancy with DS they did.It all depends on the hospital.I already asked and they said if I shaved before I came in they wouldn't do it,but if I didn't they would. They said they do it to cut down on bacteria.
  • I prefer to be clean-shaven every day so I've never had to worry. Just a consideration.
  • I didn't and I'm sure I won't this time around since it's the same dr. and same hospital. BUT at that point in your pregnancy it is a LOT more difficult to stay so clean shaven....SO I was pretty hairy once the delivery happened. Sorry doc, it isn't so easy to shave/trim when you can't see down there!

  • As soon as I found out I was expecting I booked myself for a brazilian for the first time in my life.  DH insists he doesn't care what I do either way, so I would occasionally shave, but generally not so much.

I just figured that I didn't know how many people were going to be staring at my vag between now and baby so I wanted to take care of business. Also, I don't want to not be able to tell the difference between 'me' hair and 'baby' hair when in labor. I know it seems silly but..ya.

  •  I find it a little disturbing that there are still hospitals doing this.  If I found out my hospital routinely shaved mothers, I would be highly tempted to turn around and drive to another hospital.  If they are still practicing pubic shaves from the 70s, what else are they still practicing from the 70s?  I like my medical care to be from the same decade I'm living in.

  • Wow I had never heard of this lol. Either way I usually keep myself trim but now it's getting too hard. I had planned on having hubby help me out and clean me up before baby comes either way. Because after baby is out that is one last thing I gotta deal with at least for a little while.

  • They didn't with K and quite frankly, I wouldn't have allowed it if they tried (except in the case of a CS when it was necessary).

  • I've only heard of that being done a while ago, DH's mom said they did it to her and DH is 31.  No one ever did that to me with DD but I made sure I cleaned up down there when I took my shower before going to the hospital anyway.

  • In my country they do it to cut down on bacteria and also to avoid the hair damaging the baby's eyes. At least so i've been told.

That is seriously ridiculous.  The hair damaging the baby's eyes??  Do they think women have razor blades for pubic hair?

  • I had no idea people cared so much about their bush!!!  I prefer to be clean shaven, but have found it increasingly difficult since my belly got in the way.  If my Dr wants to shave me before delivery, go for it!  I hear it's much easier to heal when you're at least trimmed. I don't want a bush!

  • I like to be clean shaven anyways.. So I just continue on with my daily routine.. I personally liked being shaved.. Less mess down there after the baby was born.. I didnt have to worry as much with all the blood and goop getting all stuck in the hair etc... Just a personal preference..haha
