I think I just saw a mouse!

The first time since we've been here. Wth am I supposed to do to get rid of it? I still have unpacked boxes here in the house and the kids toys are all over. Help! I had the door open a bit tonight bringing in packages from the store so it could've snuck in then?

Re: I think I just saw a mouse!

  • We know there have been mice before we came because there's evidence under the kitchen sink which I don't use. Ew.

  • Much more likely that it got in somewhere else in the house.  Lord knows how they get in this house - we've looked everywhere and haven't been able to find a likely candidate.

Poison has worked the best for us, although we haven't used it since DS has been alive.  The plain old snap traps are supposed to work well, too.  We have the snap traps that are covered (so we squeemish people don't have to see the mouse when we get rid of it).  They haven't been working well for us.

We got those plug-in sound things after the first year we had them.  Seemed to keep them away for the next several years.

    Good luck - mice sucketh.

  • I read mouse as moose. I was really confused on why you thought you needed to get rid of a moose and how on earth it would get in your house. lol! It probably didn't just sneak in. I'd just pick up some traps and put them where the kids won't get them. I'm not totally freaked out about mice though.

    LOL!

We recently had a little mouse family.  Chocolate syrup on the regular mouse traps worked great!

  • Where do they sell covered traps? I can't even look at roadkill without getting squeamish. I am going to have a hard time getting my head wrapped around the fact that I have to deal with mice. I think that's going to notch us up to moving out asap from here. I like the area but there's no way I can seal this house up to prevent infestations.
  • We got them at Menards.  I'd imagine Home Depot/Lowes/local hardware would all have options.

I may have to try the chocolate syrup...

Chocolate syrup or peanut butter. :)

  • PB so didn't work the last time we used it.  :(

Yeah, PB worked at our last house but not at this one.  I wonder if those mice told their little mousy friends what to look out for.  Jerks.

  • Any chance you can get a cat?  My mother got a kitten a couple of months ago.  The little guy is only about 15 weeks old and it's killed 5 mice in one weekend!  My older cat would never even trouble herself to chase a mouse, but kittens are naturally inclined to.

  • I live in a barn. Mice are a fact of life. However, mice fall clearly under DH's domain. We always have traps and poison out in the kitchen. When I see one in a trap, I tell him. The mouse then disappears. It's great.

Once one died on a counter, probably from poison. DH was out of town. I almost called the guy who rents the mobile home on our property to come dispose of it. That's how much I didn't want to do it. But I couldn't leave it on the counter either. (I mean...ewwww!) So I got a shovel with a long handle, and scooped him up and got rid of him. Then I majorly, majorly, majorly disinfected all of the counters.

I still feel pretty proud of myself.

Get some traps. Get some poison. They work.
