May be a strange question....

What do  you do with your newborn when they are awake?  I try to keep him engaged, walk him around, show him things, take him for walks, but there is only so much I can think of to do.  I try reading to him too.  Seems I run out of things to do.  I realize a newborn really can't "do" anything so I'm struggling to find things to do with him while he's awake.

Advice???

  • I have the same question!  The only things I have been doing are holding her, reading to her, talking to her.  I know I should break out the Moby and probably carry her around, but I haven't done it yet.

  • As long as she's content, I don't think you really have to "do" anything to entertain her.  My baby could look at the shower curtain for 20 minutes, and I certainly don't feel bad about that.  It's when they are fussy and bored that is the problem...
  • Before my DS was 7 weeks, he was pretty fussy and not easily entertained. Now, I spend the day talking to him, bouncing him,  and listening to music with him. He likes when I put him in my sling and wear him during chores. We take walks pretty often, sometimes I'll tell him what we're doing, but mostly he just likes to take it all in. He plays in his bouncy chair when I'm making breakfast, but I talk to him and eat with him. I put him on a blanket and he will just check out the ceiling fan for a while.

I don't feel like I need to keep him entertained constantly. I wear him a lot and feel like he learns just by being included. I watch his face and he seems so interested in everyday things, so I feel like I'm teaching him enough.

  • I usually just talk to my DD and give her lots of kisses! She still sleeps a lot so when she is awake I just like to try to make her smile.
Sometimes it's okay to follow. (Picture is a clicky)
