At what point can your dr tell you what position the baby is in?

I have an appointment tomorrow, and I'm hoping my doctor can tell me from just feeling my abdomen.  But I have no idea if that's something they can do at this point.  

I'm really just curious because I want to interpret what in the world this movement I'm feeling is.  Danielle has a favorite spot, really far over to the left, just below belly button height, and I can't decide if it's her head (hiccups?) or her bottom/legs (repetitive kicking?).  I feel movement elsewhere sometimes, but she always seems to return to this spot.

    I could tell around 28 weeks just by pushing lightly with my fingertips when I felt her move/pressure in certain areas. On Thanksgiving I could feel her head up by my ribs (felt like a baseball) confirming that she likes being upright, and has mostly been in that position since 22 weeks.

    A  MW told me her position at 26 weeks by palpation.

    I've never asked but at my 27 wk u/s they told me LO was breech, hopefully it doesn't stay that way.

    My OB could tell at my appt on Tuesday.  He barely glanced at my belly and then felt her head, back and bum.  (She was in a headdown, birthing-type position, but she's already moved since then.)

    My midwife told me at my last appt cause I was curious.  I was pretty sure her head was down, because that's where I always feel her hiccups.  Sometimes on one side, sometimes on the other.  I was right...her head is down and she just goes from side to side usually.  My MW said she can still flip breech, but it's not really likely.  She could tell just by feeling.

    My doctor told me head down at my appointment on Wednesday.  LO has since moved.  I was in L&D all weekend for kidney stones and so they kept checking the heartbeat which was all over the place.  I got to hear the hiccups on the monitor and I would have never placed them as that just by feeling alone.  Lots of tossing and turning still.
