Trying to Get Pregnant

Help me on choosing WHEN to temp, please

Well, I know my chart is going to be a mess no matter what. I work night shift, 12 hr shifts, 3-4 days a week. I usually get up around 4:45pm and go to sleep as late as 11:30am on work days. On non-work days I "stay up late," as in I go to bed more around 1pm, and sleep "late," as in as late as 9pm or so. I know I should set my alarm to go off at the same time every day and make sure I get at least 3 uninterrupted hours of sleep, but,DH gets up before me and wakes me up, one complication, so I should temp when he gets up. But I wake up sometimes for, really, no reason at all. Like yesterday, I woke up at 2pm, freaked because I thought I overslept (I went to bed early that day), but I made myself temp right then. Because DH would be waking in about 2 hours or less, I wouldn't have 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep...but it would mean my temping timeline is off. (thankfully, I usually fall immediately back to sleep)So, which do you think is more important? Temping when you've had 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep...or temping at the same time every day despite the uninterrupted part? (btw, I don't have my chart linked just yet as I'll OFFICIALLY be charting starting next week when CD1 shows. This attempt is just too whacked out and I forgot too many days.)

  • I'd go with 3 hours of sleep. There is a secont on FF about shift working and temping.  Try looking there

  • Try and temp at the same time, but the more reliable temp will be after your most solid sleep.  I typically temp around 8:30 am but occasionally I have to work a morning shift so I end up temping around 7 am.
  • Thanks. Basically FF says take it when I've had the most sleep, which I think agrees with you. I was just hoping to hear some expert advice from you ladies, too.

I think the one on FF also might take into account that many people on night shifts switch back to a day-ish schedule...which I don't do. I just don't always sleep through the "night."

  • I'm no help but I have the same problem!  I am going to give it a shot and see what happens.  I think I am just going to go with after the most amount of sleep and see how that works.  It just worries me seeing everyone think their charts are messed up because they took their temp at a different time.

  • I too work nightshift 12hrs 3/wk...i just started charting temps a wk ago...on FF it will have an open circle on ur chart when ur temp times are off, but i have also been temping after at least 3 hrs of sleep. One thing that I did do is make a note of which night i worked so i can see a pattern (what I am hoping for)...Good Luck hopefully we wont have to think about it to much longer. If u just started temping like I have, feel free to look at my chart to see what ur may look like as far as that goes :)
