2nd Trimester

How long is everyone planning on working?

How long is everyone planning on working till?  My due date is March 3 and originally planned on working until Feb 17 (two weeks before my due date). I am starting to have second thoughts about that!!  I technically don't care about my maternity leave b/c it's unpaid and I am only guaranteed the job I have now when I decide to return and I AM NOT returning to this position so it doesn't really matter to me if I get the maternity leave or not.  Anyway, I am starting to really feel run down and starting to get all the pregnancy woes (back ache, leg cramps, the waddle, etc) and now I am reconsidering working until mid Feb!  I feel like I'll barely make it to the end of the year!!  I'm just wondered what others are doing in regards to working till their due dates.........

Re: How long is everyone planning on working?

  • I'm going to work as long as I possibly can. I'm not due until the 19th of April so probably up until the 16th which is the Saturday before. Unless of course there are other reasons that I can't work. I will also be cutting down my hours to 32 each week for the last couple months as its getting really hard to be on my feet for 8 hours a day 5 days a week.

  • I am due May 31st and will work until baby comes out. Of course, our last day of school is the end of May (I think May 27th?) so if baby is one time or late, I will be out of work for the summer anyway.

  • Barring any complications, I plan to work until I go into labor. I'm an attorney now and sit at my desk most of the day, so there is no real physical stress at my job. If I feel cruddy toward the end, I will work from home, but still work. I don't want to waste any paid leave by taking time off before I go into labor.

In my last pregnancy I stopped working at 38 weeks because it was August and I worked in a huge non-air conditioned warehouse running a rare book website, which involved lots of physical work and I was so uncomfortable at the end.

  • I plan on working up until the last possible second unless the doc tells me otherwise.  I love my job!  Plus, I work from home 95% of the time so it's really easy for me to take it easy when I need to.

  • I'm due March 1st and my last day as of now is Feb 11.  I'm a teacher and we get 20 days before and 20 days after paid, but I can't move the days to make it 40 after.  I just wanted to give myself enough leeway just in case he is late because they count the days based on his actual delivery date.  If you aren't feeling well and you aren't returning to work anyway, I would go earlier, unless you really need the money.  I was thinking of going earlier but I also don't want to be sitting at home by myself for an extra week or so.  I think I'd go stir crazy.

As far as not feeling well, I've found that it really helps to walk and stay active.  The more I sit around, the crappier I feel.  My dr told me to walk 2 miles a day and not because I am overweight by any means, but it'll make the pregnancy much easier.

  • I made it up to my due date with DS (he was a week late) and I'm hoping to do the same with this one, if not working up to when he decides to show up.  I only have 8 weeks off and not all of that is paid, so I'd rather spend the time I have off with the baby rather than waiting for him to show up.

Then again, I have to admit, having that last week off before DS was born really helped me to relax, get things in order and de-stress, so I guess we'll just play it by ear.

  • I hate my job and work nights so I can't do any of the prenatal classes offered in my city. So I am choosing to take my leave as early as possible, which in Ontario Canada is 8 weeks prior to delivery- we get a year so having two months to prepare, do my prenatal classes etc doesn't seem like a huge deal. Plus I planning on working on my realestate career while I'm on Mat leave so taking it in the spring when the market is busy will help.
  • Thanks everyone......I work full time as an instructional assistant in an autistic support classroom and it is draining.  The kids are very needy (low functioning) and several are aggressive so it takes every ounce of my energy to get through the day.  I just feel like I am doing so much and the pay is awful, which makes it seem like it is not worth it, especially while pregnant.  That is why I am not returning to this position, plus the fact that my monthly pay wouldn't even begin to cover daycare, so it wouldn't be worth it.  Which is why I don't want to stay until Feb 17!!  Just checking out everyone's opinions......

  • With DS, I worked the day before my scheduled c/s. I will do the same with this one. It totally sucks working until the end and I was so miserable last time. But I don't want to waste what little maternity leave I get.
  • I'm going to listen to my body this time. Last time my docs wanted to put me out and I compromised and worked 25 hours a week from 7 months on and ended up having my son a month early due to health issues. Thank God I listened finally and went on leave Dec 19th. He was born Jan 13th so i didn't even end up with all of my paid leave time since i'm in CA and they cover 4 weeks before.

I'm on limited hours right now and have a super stressful job so it will just depend on my body, blood pressure and any other issues with this pregnancy. I've learned not to push myself and to listen to my doc...i'd recommend that route as well. :)

  • I'm gonna just feel it out this time. Last time I made it until the day I delivered which was IMO, impressive as I worked retail management.

This time I'm part time and low stress, so who knows.

  • I'll work up until my induction date (or until I go into labor, if she decided to come early) With dd, I drove from work to the hospital.

I have a very physically demanding job (I'm an occupational therapist). I have been dealing with braxton hicks since 17 weeks and all of the 'pregnancy woes' while lifting, transferring and exercising my patients and plan to do so until the end.  I would rather 'deal' with working up until then end if that means I get more time at home when the baby is actually here.

  • I plan on working till I go into labor. I work at a beauty salon as a receptionist and im not requiered to walk around to much so its not to bad. My boss and co-workers are like family so if I go into labor at work it would be one exciting day for us, and the other recpetionist is ready to cover my schedule the second i need her. I dont have any paid leave, or sick days or vaction so the longer I work the better.

  • I'm hoping to work until I go into labor, pretty much.  I'm a desk jockey, so I don't have to worry about heavy lifting or being on my feet all day; I'm hoping that helps.  That way I can take all my leave for time off with the Munchkin after he's born.

  • If you are not coming back, you can leave whenever you want.

I'm planning my last day for 3 days before my due date - I'm due on a Monday and my last day will be the Friday before.

  • I'm lucky in that I can do my job from home (in fact, that's my post-baby plan too.) So if I get tired of commuting on the subway each day, my boss would be fine if I worked from my living room. My plan is to work till the last possible second -- both for maternity leave purposes and because I think I'd be bored otherwise and spend too much time worrying about delivery.

  • am due March 31st i hope to start my leave about the March 18th which is two weeks before my due date. i have twelve weeks paid leave and DH and i agree that if we are not comfortable with baby sitting arrangement when its time for me to go back to work he will take some time off work to stay with LO for about 2-3 weeks hopefully we should have things figured out by then.........
  • Barring any medical complications, I plan to work until I go into labor.

Last time I was due Aug. 14th and I stopped working July 30.  I ended up going a week past my due date before Drew arrived so I was off work for a full 3 weeks.  It was not fun at all.  I was bored, stir crazy, and quite the ball of emotions.  I know that working wouldn't have been a walk in the park, but most days I wished I could go in just so I'd have something to DO.

  • Last time I worked up until my due date. This time I plan on leaving a week before because I am a band teacher and we have a concert 3 weeks later. I want to give my sub (same as last time) at least a month with the kids before he directs the concert. I get 8 weeks off anyway and school will be over by the time my leave is up.
  • I will work until the last possible day. I only get 9 weeks of maternity leave and I want to spend them with my baby.

  • Provided there aren't any complications that dictate otherwise, my plan is to work up until I have the baby.  I'm an operations officer in an office and it's a desk job that primarily involves emails & phone calls.  Working from home isn't an option given to me (and based on the office I work in, I'm not sure I'd want that option).

  • I'm another one who will work as long as I can, but I plan to go back to my  job. Also, my  mat leave is paid by using my sick days, so I don't want to take any more than necessary.

I do work with a lady who is pregnant and due in May. She's decided that after this baby is born, she will not return to work. She is going to finish teaching at the end of this semester and not come back in January.

  • I'm planning to be a SAHM and I'm leaving my job at 33 weeks.  It's enough physical activity and mental stress to make me tired now, so I can only imagine how the next two months will be.  I can't wait to be done.

  • I am planning to work until at least April15th maybe the 8th.. I am due the 21st and we go off for Spring brea the 15th... However I will be listening to my body. Since I have a long commute in NYC I do not want to e in the city and have my water break so once I dilate more than 2cm and become soft I am staying home. I will be coming back the last week of school but taking the following year off...
  • I'm due June 1, so I plan to work until about May 15. I won't be returning so I'm taking it early. I'm going to be a stay at home mama. :)

  • I plan to go out as soon as i can, which is this week or next week.  I worked hard during the first 2 trimesters and i want my third trimester to nest and rest.  I commend those women that work up until their due date, but i cannot do that.  Good luck to you!
  • I plan on having my last day be either April 1st or April 8th.   I am due May 11th.   My work involves a lot of travel to client sites and I live 2 hours away from our office (work from home the majority of time),  I just don't want to be driving around a lot in my last couple of months.  My biggest fear is driving on the highway in the middle of no where and going into labor.

I probably won't be returning to my job after, I'm planning on being a SAHM.

This exactly - I am also due April 19th and I plan on working pretty much until I have the baby.  My job is pretty low activity level.  (And I will obviously stop working early if I need to, but as of right now this is my plan.)

  • I feel your pain- I'm a behavioral therapist with low functioning kids. I am drained by the time I get home. I was planing on taking off all of February, but then my DH got laid off, so as of now, I'll be dealing with the kiddos till my water breaks:(

  • With my first, I was in pre-labor all weekend, worked on Monday through contractions, and went to the hospital Monday night. I didn't want to waste any time off with the baby by taking time to myself before. However, that said, I did use some vacation time to take off every Monday for the four weeks before my due date. So for a month I had three-day weekends and four-day weeks. Nice.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • I will probably work until the day before my c-section.  Last time, I worked past my due date and took the day before my induction off.  I don't have a very physically demanding job, but at the time, I was working in between 2 offices 0.5 miles apart (in the same building) and walking about 3 miles a day (back and forth) with horrible sciatic pain.  It was worth dealing with the pain while walking to be able to spend the full 12 weeks with DD after she was born.

If you're going to be a SAHM and can financially afford to leave early, go for it!

  • Like most have said, unless my doctor ends up advising otherwise (and there are no known risk factors yet), I'll try to be here until I go into labor.

It's a low-stress desk job and the only paid leave I get is the vacation/sick leave that I've stored up, and there won't be much of that.

  • I am due on May 9 and hoping to work until May 6. Most of my co-workers made it to a few days before their due dates which gives me hope that I will make it that far. I want as much time off after the baby as I can get before I have to return to work.
