I can't believe Costco sells these. Please read- PIP

DH and I went to Costco yesterday and bought a train set to put at the bottom of our Christmas tree. DH put it together last night. It was really cute. When we read the bottom of the box, it said the there is a chemical known to cause cancer and birth defects. WTF, Costco? How can you sell this?? We returned it this morning and told Customer Service about it. They read the box and were shocked.

So please girls, if you are planning on buying a train set, please read the box. Here is the picture I took of mine before returning.

  • Don't eat it and Im sure you'll be fine. I don't fault Costco for selling them, the warning is there, so the people who buy it know what the risks are.

  • Aren't a lot of things in California (it says the State of California) labelled that way, when they normally wouldn't be other places?

Yeah. Most things are labeled that way most likely to cover their own butts. So someone who gets any of these symptoms can't sue them and cry wolf that it's the little trains fault.
  • DH was just sitting next to me and read this.  He said Extra Gum also has a warning about cancer on the back.
  • It's pursuant to CA prop 65. Any product that contains anything that causes birth defects must be labeled that way. If you don't consume the product and/or aren't pg, you're fine. Even my office building has a similar sign in it.
  • Plus, it's labeled ages 14 and up. I don't see a problem with it. And like PPs said, it's a labeling thing, not a warning that is WILL give you cancer.
  • It's probably the plastic that they use to make it.

In CA all hot tubs, jacuzzi's, spa's & whirl pools have that same warning on them.

Along with anything else that is used excessivley(sp?) that may cause cancer or or any harm to pregnant women or babies.

  • Everyone else already covered the reason for the label and that you have nothing to worry about. Maybe the real message should be that if you buy a train set to be used in an area where your baby will be, maybe you should read the box carefully and not purchase something that is meant for ages 14+.

Fair enough, but I have never purchased anything in Florida that had a label similar to that one. And I am over 14, this was not for DD as she is not allowed near the tree.

  • Most artificial Christmas trees, lights and garland have the same warning (fyi).

  • The paint used on the train has lead.  Don't fault California, at least we warn people...other states should do the same.

Oh, by no means I am faulting California. If this is true, then it should be labeled. I was just very surprised to see that on the box, I have never seen that before. So I made a choice to return the item. I posted to make people aware that they should read labels. But I guess a lot of people know about it.

I read them. You'd be surprised to see how many places that warning pops up in CA. I've seen it on drive-thru windows, look around I thnk youll notice it more often now that youre aware.
