Re: But dad i dont wanna give him away!

  • Try covering the areas you dont want him to claw with tinfoil, or double sided tape (pet stores sell special extra wide tape).  Cats don't like the way the tin foil feels and don't like getting their hands sticky... it may stop the behavior.

Make sure you have plenty of scratching posts available covered in catnip so they smell more appealing than the furniture.

Please don't declaw your kitty especially if he is already an adult, it is extremely painful for them and can cause permanent damage to their paws.

If you are really desperate, there are little plastic caps you can put over their nails... I've never tried it because my kitties are pretty good about not scratching what they aren't supposed to.

  • Ive decided im going to take my cat (and mothers cat) to the vet and have there nails trimmed... and try keeping them from doing the act even if they cant destroy the furniture....

I will NEVER declaw a cat... EVER EVER EVER EVER! my mom can go get hers done and feel guilty about it for the rest of her life... but this is my baby kitty.... no no no no no

  • you don't have to declaw or give him away.  seriously.

we make sure our cat has lot's of scratching posts and keep the plastic covers on her nails.  it doesn't effect her at all, she still scratches everything but nothing gets messed up.

you can also get them on amazon, at petsmart, or petco.

  • Have the vet show you how to trim the nails.  It's actually pretty easy to do.  I do a few at a time and just keep going over the course of a week until they are all trimmed.

  • Make sure to have lots of scratching posts, my cat goes nuts for them :)

  • Ditto the PPs about triming and catnip infused scratch pads (which are between $5 and $15 at WalMart depending on size and shape). It is a lifesaver for our furniture. We also found that the "scratch off" spray that you can get at a pet store did actually work well to get our cat to leave the furniture alone long enough for her to become attached to the new scratch pads/posts. We keep a big jar of catnip around now and she loves when we put another scoop of it on her pads for her.

  • I really hope that this is MUD.

I trim my cats nails every 3 to 4 weeks as needed when their claws grow back.  I also make sure they have a fresh scratching post and toys so they don't get destructive.

Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment

  • PLESE don't declaw or give away your kitty. The SoftPaws work wonders and are inexpensive and quick to apply. I'd bet the vet could even do the first ones for you and show you how for future reference.

I also don't get it...do you live with your parents??

You think that you should get rid of your cat instead of taking ten minutes to trim her nails? That is wonderful.

This was my first thought as well...

  • Wow, really? Getting rid of your cat? You know what happens to cats at shelters? They get a week and then they get killed. I am happy to say I have two declawed cats that never went through any "horrible" pain and don't live lesser lives or suffer for it. In fact, they're happier than my clawed cats because they don't get punished all the time for scratching things!

The only negative thing about having a declawed cat is that they lose that defense, but if it's an indoor cat anyway, it doesn't matter. You protect them just fine, and they still pack a punch against playmates and toys.

As far as getting the cat to stop scratching, I have done scratching posts and a squirt bottle, and the combination does wonders. Spray them for incorrect scratching and they'll figure out the right place.

And it doesn't make them mean, because I'm sure someone will say that. I have 7 very, very affectionate cats.

  • Yes im 18

Yes i live with my parents

and No i dont want to DECLAW my cat... but my father gave me the ultimatum of declaw or have him find a new home.

I talked to my dad and asked if i could trim his nails and possibly get the nail covers.

When i posted this i was seeing if yall had any ideas (that worked) for me to use instead of declawing.

Thanks everyone who gave ideas (:

Im taking him to the vet tomorrow afternoon to get them trimmed down.. see if that works and i MIGHT go get the nail covers.'

Wow...you are clearly not an educated pet owner. You obviously have no idea how cats claws are removed. Please for the love of God don't declaw anymore.

  • Declawing a kitten and declawing a CAT are two different things if this a cat over 6 months it is a lot more painful, and recovery is more difficult.  The softclaws work! I work at a low cost spay/neuter clinic and we will not do declaws, but we will put softclaws on if you buy them and bring them in for 5$ (and that is just to trim the nails so they can be put on) so check and see if there is any place around you that would do that.  We have a lot of owners that are to afraid to trim the nails or put them on.

  • They have plastic caps you can put on it's claws that won't harm it. Also make sure you have lots of scratching posts around, could put catnip on them too.
