Carseat base/fender bender question

Possibly a dumb question: I got rear-ended yesterday (without LO, thank goodness!).  I know if you have an accident with the carseat in the car, it's a good idea to replace it.  Does the same hold true with the base?  I would think it'd be fine, but wasn't 100%.

Thanks!

Re: Carseat base/fender bender question

  • Ask yourself if there is any conceivable way that the plastic could have been compromised, and if it's worth it to you to pay the $60 for a new base to be sure. You could also just switch to a convertible earlier than planned. Fwiw, I think the "experts" recommend replacing the base if it's been in an accident.

  • I believe you are supposed to replace the whole thing. I agree with SB about getting the convertable car seat.

  • I bet it's fine, but I would still replace it. The carseat is the one thing I'm not messing around with!
  • Yeah, I'm certain it's fine but I'm paranoid and I would never get over it if something happened to E because we didn't replace such an inexpensive piece of equipment.

The convertible carseat isn't a bad idea.  Do they have to be a certain weight before you can switch them to one?  E's still such a little 'nut.

I think most start at 5 pounds, so you're probably okay. We switched my son at 4 months but he is a chunker.

  • Okay...looks like I need to start researching convertible carseats a little earlier than expected.

    Thanks, ladies!

  • Oh, and one more thing!  Would I be able to get the driver at fault to pay for any of this (a new base or a convertible seat), or are we on our own there?

  • I have heard of some peoples insurance covering this.
  • From what I know, the insurance will cover a replacement (of course, it always depends on the policy, but I think most/many do).  That means that they probably won't cover a convertible but will replace the base.

    I believe so

  • Check with the manufacturer but most infant carriers can be used without the base.  The base is purely for convenience.  We only have 1 base in DH's car.  When E has gone with someone else we are sure to show them how to install the car seat and lock the seat belt.
