Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Trying to wean off of Nexium for AR and I'm about to go crazy.

LO has been on Nexium since he was around 3 months old. He's now a little over 6 months and pedi said try to wean him off of it. We were at one packet twice daily and we got down to one packet daily. Now we are trying to go to one packet every other day and holy crap, it's not good. LO is spitting/throwing up and wants nothing but to be held upright with you walking. My back feels like it's going to break. The only relief I can give him is to drink a little water or juice but then he spits that right up. Yesterday I gave him his meds and today as well. He seems like he is not ready to come off of it. Anyone have any words of advice? I'll be calling the pedi Monday but for now, I have to give him his meds to give him relief.

  • No advice, but that sounds awful! Sad I hope he gets some relief soon!

Thanks. It freaking sucks, for him and I. I don't know what to do to relieve the pain. I'm about to get the Moby wrap out I guess.

What if you give him some bread or puffs or something to soak up the acid? Or cereal? I don't know, I'm sure you've considered/tried these things already.

  • Sounds like he's not ready. Unless there was some medical reason he coolant have the Nexium I would medicate as usual and call the pedi Monday to report back that it didn't go well.

He's definitely not ready. The pedi didn't give really a medical reason, she just said it's not a long term med.
  • Kais on prevacid for GERD and we tried to wean off at 6 months, with no success.  We tried again at 11m, and he's still on it.  Good luck to you!

  • My son has been on Zantac for 8 almost 9 months. I tried to wean him off of it and he isn't ready either. I had the same problem with him not wanting to lay down and spitting up. My advice is to put him back on it.... However, I am not a doctor. But that is what my doctor said to do.

  • I suggest resuming medicating him at the dose and frequency that worked for him and calling the pedi on Monday.  I wouldn't let the poor guy suffer and you know it won't hurt him if it's the same that he was on before, kwim?

Ugh - hang in there. How long have you been doing one packet every other day? I think I remember reading that when you wean, there is often a flare period for up to 3-5 days after. If symptoms are still persisting after a week, the wean was probably not successful. I could be wrong on that, but I'm pretty sure that's the case. Best wishes - hope it's just temporary and the wean is successful!

You know, the flare up period you are talking of sounds about right. We had him on once a day for maybe a month and it was bad after we did that then it got better. I'm going to move him back to once per day and leave him like that for a while.
  • My DD is on one Nexium packet once a day and my pedi said we won't know if she's outgrown her reflux until she's around a year or so. I'm going to talk to him next week at her 9 month appointment about cutting down to half a pack per day to see how that goes. 6 months just sounds awfully early to try to wean especially with all of the new foods he'll be encountering that could trigger it. Good luck!
  • My DS was on 2 meds twice a day for the first 6 months, and when I tried to wean him it did not go well!  After a recommendation from a fellow AR mom I took him to an acupuncturist that has experience with babies... and he is off all meds!  He also is now on lactose free formula instead of hypoallergenic (which the pedi said would not happen until 12 months), and is eating more and much happier:)  If you are at all open to alternative medicine I would look into acupuncture, it has been a tremendous help for us!  Good luck:)
