Baby Names

Etienne?

There was a man in Coco Chanel's life named Etienne.  I kind of like it, it's the French version of Ethan.

Not sure I would name my kid that (and I'd NEVER get DH on board), but I think it's nice.

Re: Etienne?

  • I think it's a neat name, but not in the U.S. If you're French Canadian---cool, go for it. Or if you live in Europe. But French versions of names seem to go one way in America---toward girls. I think they're seen as more feminine. I wouldn't use a French variant of a name for a boy.

That's what I was thinking.  I like it, but I think people would automatically assume it was a girl's name here in the states.  That's why I wouldn't use it.

It just seems romantic to me, if that makes sense.  Of course, romantic names rarely go over well IRL.

  • I don't even begin to know how to pronounce French, but it looks like it would sound cool :) ..would probably be a little too "weird" for me to ever consider it, tho.

  • I think it's a great name. I'd never use it. It would sound very strange with our very English last name!

  • It's ok. If you're living in France or Quebec, I'd totally say go for it but if not, it would never go over well. I knew a French guy in high school with this name. He was a sweetheart so I automatically think of him! I wouldn't use it though. Even if, I happen to have a VERY French last name, my husband IS French, and we live in Canada and speak French on a daily basis. It's just TOO French.

  • I know the nicest man named Etienne.  Of course (like PPs stated), he lives in France.  I loved the name ever since I met him, but I don't think we could pull it off (especially in the area we live).  I think a lot of ppl here would think it's a girl's name.

  • I probably wouldn't use it(and it's too "out there" for DH's tastes), but it's a nice name, and has the advantage of being unique without being "youneek."

The first person/character that came to mind for me was Etienne Navarre, from Ladyhawke.

  • I like it ok. I grew up in Canada, so I've always been familiar with the name, though usually just through my French text books since I lived in English-speaking Canada.

Etienne, however, is not Ethan. It's Stephen.

  • It makes me think of a school I used to supply in - Sir Georges Etienne Cartier.  I disliked the school, but I will try not to hold that against the name.

  • I like Etienne - probably because I had a good friend with this name.  He was from Puerto Rico and was so nice....I remember when I met him I had a really hard time pronouncing and remembering his name - then I thought of "ATM" and that helped me :)

  • Makes me think of leather coats (Aigner). Cool name but people unfamiliar with French names will think he's a girl before they meet him.

This. It's French for Stephen, not Ethan.
