You can check the Caltrans website for I-80 conditions and that will tell you when chain control is down but if you want to get out this weekend I don't think you can do it without chains, I'd just walk to Safeway and buy them (you'll need them anyway if you plan on coming up again this winter since you don't have 4WD.)  Even if the freeway is clear tomorrow, I don't know what Hwy 267 or 89 will be like.  At any rate you're safer driving the long way through Tahoe City and up Hwy 89 to get to I-80 rather than over Brockway Summit.  Sorry I don't live at the lake or I could pick you up some chains :-(

    No worries :) We're working on getting some chains from the Safeway down the road. Such a novice mistake! Thanks for the advice about the alternate route through Tahoe City. If we get outta here we will give it a go.

    Call them first, the stores tend to run out of chains in this weather.  You can get chains anywhere, try the drugstores too.  There's not much around the lake, next time stay in Truckee...lots more to do, indoor playground for Ada, 7 ski resorts within a 20 minute drive and easy access to the freeway!  And I'm always looking for a cat-friendly house sitter so we can get away more so if you want a free place to stay on your next vacation let's talk!
