Robyn, explain the bottle thing to me...

Since you did a great job of explaining the carseat thing... Wink  I just saw the post about giving up bottles and I don't understand why toddlers can't drink milk from a bottle???  I've seen posts on the toddler board about this issue but never knew why!  Simon never took a bottle so it was never an issue for us, he drinks milk from a straw sippy cup, but I don't understand what's wrong with a bottle, if Aaron likes milk and will drink it from a bottle that's great right?  Some kids won't drink milk at all!  (it took me a while to get S to like the taste of milk!)

Re: Robyn, explain the bottle thing to me...

  • So the deal is that Aaron will only drink whole milk from a bottle. I've tried straw sippies (which he prefers for water) and spout sippies and insulated sippies and clear sippies. But he'll only drink his milk from a bottle.

    He LOVES the bottle.

But he won't hold it himself. Either DH or I have to hold it. And my pediatrician's office is of the mindset that by his age, he should be solely using sippy cups.

If he would hold the bottle by himself, perhaps I'd let this go a bit longer, but I think by continuing with the bottles, he's just not interested.

We're down to just one bottle per day (after breakfast). I keep offering him milk in cups, but he won't take it. I'm going to try chocolate milk to see if it will entice him to take it from the cup. He does like the taste of milk but he seems fixed on only having it from a bottle.

  • This was a good question, Callie has one bottle in the am as soon as she wakes up too. It is her milk bottle but it must be warm. Odd, I guess babies like what they like..My pedi said as long as she is getting yogurt and cheese it is ok..I wish I had the answer for this one,.
  • I'm in the same situation as Mtnrider - Ellie never would take a bottle - so I have to admit to not paying a lot of attention to the wean from the bottle around 12 months stuff.  But I thought it had to do with tooth and ear issues.

Well that is a pain if Aaron won't hold his own bottle!  Have you tried different types of straws?  S drinks his juice/water out of the thick straw sippy (learning curve) and he drinks his milk out of the thin straw sippy (munchkin).   Also the straws are differently shaped, the thicker one is kind of flat and the thin one is round.  He hated chocholate milk but loves strawberry so just try different things.

But I still don't understand why toddlers can't just drink out of a bottle till they're 2 ro 3!  Why the push to give up the bottle at 1???

Sucked for the whole first year having a baby who never took a bottle!  How did you handle being away from Ellie?  One day when I was gone 5 hours my babysitter had to feed him spoonfuls of bm mixed with cereal just so he would get a couple ounces of bm!

  • They say it's an issue for their teeth. I don't know. Finn still gets two bottles a day. I haven't pushed the issue cause the kid still doesn't really eat table food and he doesn't really have many teeth yet either. I won't feel so bad when he eats more.

Noah never took a bottle so when I weaned him at 13 months, he rarely got milk at all. It wasn't a big deal cause he made up for it by eating cheese and yogurt and ice cream. He got his milk from other sources. It really doesn't matter if they drink milk or not as long as they are getting it from somewhere so if you want to wean him off the bottle, offer it in their favorite sippies and don't worry about it, if they don't drink it. Noah never did, but now drinks milk like a champ.

  • Adrian only drinks milk (previously formula) from a bottle. It's comforting to him and it's not a big deal for me. So I'm not taking it away anytime soon. My friend's 3 yr old still drinks milk from a bottle and my mom says I was about the same age and also still drinking bottles.

Maybe it's a no-no but I've ignored those kind of "rules" before. I use a bumper on LO's crib and he's been a tummy sleeper since 4 months. I introduced solids all at once, not one at a time. I know maybe we've been lucky but my mother's instinct drives my decisions. I know you're supposed to do certain things but sometimes it doesn't quite work out and every baby's different.

Personally, the bottle thing is OK with me, but to each her own, that's just my very opinionated 2 cents Smile

Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • BTW, Adrian takes one 8 oz bottle in the morning, one 6 oz before his nap and another 8 oz before bed. He doesn't like to hold the bottles either and I've been enabling that unfortunately. But we use Dr. Browns, isn't that what you use too Robyn? Dr Bs are heavier and most kids don't like to hold them. I've tried other brands and he doesn't want them. My friend just recommended the Walmart cheap ones, she says the nipples are similar. I'll try one but we'll see. Adrian is not picky about anything else except his bottles!

Yes, we use Dr. Brown's too.  And perhaps that's why he won't hold them. And I'm still giving him some... but only one or two a day. In the AM (4 oz) and in the afternoon (also 4 oz).
