Babies: 9 - 12 Months

crawling tunnel?

I was wondering if I could get some advice. . . my daughter LOVES crawling between and under things.  She'll be a year old at Christmas, and we wanted to get her one of the crawling tunnels, but all the ones I can find are ages 3 and up.  Do you think they're unsafe for little ones, or does anyone know of one OK for 12 months and up? (there was one I saw for babies, but it was for baby babies - like 0-6 mo, and didn't look very fun for older babies)

Re: crawling tunnel?

  • I would say they are safe unless there are small parts to it. I think they say 3 and older to cover their butts. It might be a hazard for little ones because of suffocation.. just my guess. Older kids can get themselves out of things easier than a 1 year old. I would get one though. I have toys that are recommended for children much older and DS does fine. :)

  • The only thing i would be concerned with me DD personally is if she crawled into the tunnel and half way thru got scared and "stuck" and i would have to go "save" her by dumping her out of it everytime lol

I use to work in a toddler room at a day care and we used tunnels ALL of the time! 9 mo + LOVED them! I say go for it!

  • We are giving DD a crawling tunnel with an attached tent for Christmas.  It does say that it has small parts and is labeled "Not for Children under 3 years", but I think it's just because the little hooks that attach the tunnel to the tent could come off, so they're just covering themselves.

I plan to take it out and assemble it before Christmas, fully inspect it, and reinforce anything that looks like it could come off easily by adding glue or extra stitches.  If I don't feel comfortable with it, I'll pack it up and pull it out in 2 years :)

  • I'm so glad you asked this! My DH found one in a sale paper last week and wants to get DD one (she'll be a year old in Feb). I wondered why they all said 3 and up... My only concern with DD is that now that she is pulling up on everything, she doesn't realize what's stable and what's not.  So, I'm just a little afraid that she might try to stand up right against the tent part (which, of course, will not support her 21 1/2 lb little butt).  :)  I think we'll go ahead and get it, though.  She'll only use it while supervised.

  • DD loves the tunnel at Gymboree. We just got her one from Bed Bathy and Beyond with an attached play tent, although you can use them separately.  We'll give it to her for Hannukah.  We got brand new for $15!!

  • Our LOs are crawling, cruising, and trying to walk a little (2 of them). We got the tunnel/ tent combo and they have been having a blast with it. The tunnel separates from the tent so we have left them separate for now.

There are no small pieces that they can get, the tunnel scrunches up if you need to "rescue" someone from the middle, and so on. I got it at Menards for $9.88 and was one of the best deals I found.

  • we have one from Ikea and DC loves it. We are careful with it and sit at one end or the other to keep it from rolling. She and DD1 just love to play and squeal and giggle. BIG HIT!!
