Anyone have a tummy sleeper?

It still kind of freaks me out, but it just seems like she sleeps better that way.  She is going through the wakeful period - had never STTN, but we were managing to make it with only one BF session in the night and maybe one other time waking up and wanting to be soothed.  She would generally stay in her crib from around 9 pm to 5 am, then I would bring her to be with me and usually could get two more hours of sleep.  But, recently, she has been only making it in her crib for like 2 hours, and either wants to nurse and/or I cannot sooth her without picking her up.

When she co-sleeps, it is on her stomach, lying on my chest.  She has done that almost since birth.  She has a very strong head and has held her head up very well almost since about 5 weeks.  She also rolls from stomach to back.  Last night I put her on her stomach in her crib and she did really well.  I am kind of torn about whether I should do it again - with all of the "back to sleep" stuff out there, it makes me feel like a bad mommy, but at the same time, I feel like there are hundreds of things we are cautioned about and you just can't avoid all of them.  She used to use a sleep wedge too, then those were deemed to be dangerous...uggghh!!!  Anyone else in the same boat?

  • DS also sleeps better on his stomach, but I don't put him that way.  Maybe I'm just paranoid because a HS friend's baby just died of SIDS, but I don't want to risk it.  He just learned to roll both ways so if he starts sleeping on his tummy on his own I will let him I guess, since I know he can roll himself over if he needs to.

This, except she was more of an aquaintance. DS slept better on his tummy too, but we don't let him sleep that way - we finally got him to sleep on his back and he does great now, swaddled. He has been rolling both ways for a while now, but doesn't roll at night....yet.

  • DS started sleeping out on my chest with me in bed.  We did that for 2 1/2 weeks before we got our bassinet.  Then, he slept in there on his belly and I'd bring him into bed when he wanted to nurse.

At his one month check up, the doctor said it would be a good time to transition him to his crib, so we did.  But, I still put him on his belly.  He sleeps like a CHAMP.

Now, I don't even consider it an issue since he can roll both ways and several times when he's been put on his back, he's immediately flipped to his belly.

  • My DD is a tummy sleeper and has been since she was a few weeks old.  Now she sleeps in her crib at night on her tummy.  She has been since she was about 6 weeks old.  I still check on her when I get up in the middle of the night.  When we were babies our parents were told we need to sleep on our tummies, then it went to the side now it's the back.  There are always going to be things to worry about no matter how they sleep.  Just be cautious and check on them if you are worried.
  • Wait til your baby can roll, then he/she will decide how to sleep.  Once DD started rolling, she became a side/tummy sleeper.  There's no stopping her!

  • DS started out sleeping on my chest, on his belly. He started STTN when he was about 4 weeks old and I moved him to his bassinet where he slept, on his belly. When he was 4 months old I moved him to his crib where he sleeps, on his belly. When he was born he had HORRIBLE colic and acid reflux and NOTHING helped him sleep if he was on his back. I tried everything, and when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING. At first it made me nervous and I would wake up about every hr to check on him, but he ws fine and always has been. I make sure there's nothing "extra" in his crib and it's well ventilated (sp?). DS sleeps between 8 and 11 hours straight every night and I KNOW it wouldn't happen if he was on his back, we've tried.

If you're REALLY nervous about it they do have SIDS monitors that you can buy. You put it under their matress and with every breath they take, it clicks. If for some reason they stop breathing it will set an alarm off. We have one but I've never used it.

Here's the one we have, but you might be able to find it cheaper, I'm not sure.

Hope this helps, and good luck! =)

  • We also have a tummy sleeper since about 3 weeks old.  It works for us.  It definitely makes me nervous, but he sleeps really well - 10-11 hours a night.  I'll be glad when he's 4 months old, though, and past the highest risk age for SIDS (which is 2-4 months).

This.  It is safest to wait until she rolls herself, and always best to lay her on her back to start.  Ever since we stopped swaddling, my LO has become a side and tummy sleeper.  And definitely no loose blankets - we use and love Halo Sleepsacks instead.
