Lurking from 3rd tri board

Hello ladies! I am due in January and am actually in the process of closing out my registry (and getting items I still need). I have the essentials: furniture, bedding, pack n play, high chair, cradle, clothes, diapers, wipes, meds, creams, swing, jumperoo, exersaucer, strollers and car seats.

I am nervous that I might be missing out on something - is there any item(s) out there that you WISH you had gotten prior or didn't think of as important until your LO arrived?  I need a little guidance.

Thanks a bunch!

  • With DD I was planning on EBFing, but it didn't end up working out. I wish I had had some bottles and formula in the house... although sometimes that's not a good idea for will power. Not sure that helps.

    Lots of cloth diapers/burp cloths.

Mittens - both DD and DS scratched themselves so much!

  • I was more focused on making sure I had all of the 'big' items than the small, practical stuff.

If I could do it all over again, I'd head to Walmart before delivering and stock up on these things:

    • feminine pads and panty liners
    • Dermoplast spray and Tucks pads
    • formula for emergency situations (haha!)
    • tons of water bottles (especially if you are breastfeeding)
    • any other convenience items you like to have around!

  • I'd suggest making sure you have all the baby toiletries, your feminine pads, a few bottles if you plan on EBFing (I ended up needing to supplement for the first week, but my suggestion for will power if you are EBFing is only have like 3 bottles so that it is a pain to clean them between feedings to give you incentive to keep at breastfeeding), and maybe a can of formula.

  • I wish I had - -bigger underwear to go over my incision. (unplanned section) -like 2 more packs of pads already at home -The rock and play by fisher price. My son hates sleeping flat and that thing saved nights for us. I also put him in it while I shower and get ready, he never minds hanging out in there. -way more NB sized clothing. He wore the same pack of onesies from carters for the first month or so. -that I skipped the avent bottles and went straight to the playtex drop ins. Even if you plan to ebf/pump you can definitely use them. (as long as your baby doesn't have gas issues then you might want to try a different more specialized bottle) Thats all I can think of right now. Good luck with your birth! :)

  • I wished I had gotten some infant tylenol, gripe water, gas drops etc to have on hand.

An infant hat with a chin strap. Baby's stocking hat fell over his face in the car seat and I had no clue till we arrived.

More burp cloths. I thought 20some would be enough. Silly me.

  • Bath tub, towels, shampoo. Sling if you want to wear LO. Nursing cover if you're going to nurse, or bottles. Pacifiers, boppy pillow

  • a baby carrier. i swore i would never wear my baby "like an accessory" LOL, so i didnt register for one. ill be going to babies r us on monday to buy one....
  • LOTS of baby wipes- we are going through them like crazy.

Burp cloths- I don't think you can have too many.

    Hooded towels/baby wash cloths.

Gas drops/other baby medications- just to have on hand.

Enough bottles to have dirty bottles and still have some in the cabinet. : )

  • I love my Ergo carrier.  The Breast Friend Pillow was really nice if you're thinking about breastfeeding and better than the boppy.

Sleep sacks that you can swaddle with the velcro closures are nice.  It's hard to properly swaddle a sleeping baby with a normal blanket without waking them up.  After rocking them for an hour and it's 4am...EVERYTHING is difficult.  Having to only fasten them with some velcro was really nice.

Cheap Gerber brand cloth diapers are really nice to have for burp rags.  They're really absorbent.

Bottle drying rack...I still use mine every day.  Great for not just bottles but bowls, utensils and pacifiers.

  • lots and lots of burp cloths! other ladies are right, you can never have too many....

An emergency can of formula/bottle for unsuccessful BF sessions (if u need it)

I also wish I had gotten baby monitors. I live in a tiny 2bdrm and didnt think I need them, especially since he ended up co-sleeping with me anyway. But now i see that they would come in handy during the day when I think he's asleep and I'm doing dishes or laundry and he's awake cause he broke out of his swaddle! :P

Also for yourself, lots and lots of super absorbent pads with wings----try to leave the hospital with as many of those and mesh panties as possible, you dont wanna ruin your own panties and pads to last you 2-4 weeks when ur changing them every 4hrs is EXPENSIVE...start buying them now.

Also, the hospital heating pads really helped me during my stay and I wish I had one on stand-by at home, b/c my back was still in pain for at least a week and half after delivery.

    Hope this helps! GL!

  • I almost immediately realized we needed more newborn size diapers, more blankets for swaddling because my son needed to be swaddled to sleep, nipple cream, and a second boppy cover because of all the spills of pumped milk we made on it.  Luckily, we had the waterproof protective covers and just had to get by with that when the outercover was in the wash like every other day.

oh also dont forget your nursing tanks and bras.. have atelast a couple of each on hand...u will be living in them. they are a life saver.

    GL!!

  • I second good nursing sleep bras/tanks. I also liked the pj's my mom got me. The traditional kind, pants with a button up top...easy for nursing at night or day when you don't get dressed.

I use a lot of the baby washcloths. My son has tear duct issues so I'm constantly wiping things off his face. I also agree, gas drops/gripe water whichever. Lots of wipes (I also happen to like our wipe warmer now that it's cooler at night). Extra changing pad covers. I also used a heating pad for my own recovery. I'd sit on it or lay back against it...I had back pain during and slightly after delivery. I also recommend a BIG water bottle for yourself. My hospital gave us one that had a straw. Soooo useful! Oh, and yes to the tucks pads (refrigerate those suckers) and soothies breast gel pads.

    Good luck!

  • Lots of burp cloths (we have 16 and use them all!), gas drops, nail clipper and/or file (I was too afraid to clip the first week), second boppy cover, second changing pad, bouncy seat.

  • Gripe water and/or gas drops with EXTRA oral syringes

Our Ergo carrier....please don't make the mistake I made and buy one of those cheap-o carriers that put the weight of your baby on your back and the baby's legs dangle.  It KILLED my back and I was going to give up wearing my Joy until I found out about the Ergo.  Soooo worth the money.

Wipes warmer.  It may seem a little over the top, but those wipes are freaking cold even if the temp of the house is 75F.

however long the night, dawn will break.

  • If you're breastfeeding I recommend a breast pump. The first couple weeks you will be engorged and it will help take the pressure off. Plus you can store it in your freezer for if you ever need it in case of an emergency.

Also we got an infant swing/seat thing and it's been a miracle worker. Just turn it on and set him in there and he's a happy camper.

And a moby wrap or sling of any type. It will free up your hands and makes it much easier then constantly carrying the LO.

  • if you plan on breastfeeding - register for a pump. even if you dont end up using it right away - you will have it ready to go when you do need it.

register for the small stuff - even if you think 'oh - it's cheap/easy to get myself' it will be overwelming how many little things you need and how they add up:

burp clothes; wash clothes; butt cream; diapers; wipes (def!); humidifier (especially during winter with the dry heat). the one thing i cannot live w/o is my 'boppy lounger'. its around $25 and it goes on the bed/couch/floor and the baby can lay on it. i even bottle feed her on it for a change (and lay by her side). it is seriously a lifesaver & a good registry item.

  • Honestly, if you're like me, you'll want to get out of the house in the first week, so you can pick up items that you don't have. However, these were the items we ran out for in the first week: Nursing tanks from target, maxi-pads, tucks pads, breast pads, extra batteries (for swing/bouncer, etc), swaddles.

I did not buy any formula and I am glad that I didn't. EBFing came to me pretty easily, though. Plus, the hospital gave me some formula and its just sitting there in the cabinet. Half of it was recalled, though, so I had to toss some of it.

  • baby thermometer (just in case)

and nursing pads...I soaked through my bras/shirts constantly. Breastfeeding is soo messy sometimes too!)

  • We had to go out and get more pack and play sheets (she is sleeping in that in our room). She would spit up on the sheet at one point in the night, then pee while I was changing her diaper and it would need to be changed again in the same night.

  • I would recommend not registering for too many of one type of bottle. DD will only take certain ones. It would be such a waste to have a bunch of a kind LO won't take!

Also, we had planned on not giving a pacifier, but we very thankful we received some from our shower! DD likes soothie the best, but also likes NUK. They are a couple of the kinds they recommend for BF babies.

Immediately after the first poopy diaper change at home, DH went out and bought a Diaper Geenie. I am passive about it, but he is in love with it. Also, we have a bottle warmer for when he wants to feed her (we EBF) and he loves it.

I wish we would have registered for/purchased  the JJ Cole carseat cover. Since it gets really cold where we live.

Also, most swaddling blankets are too small after a couple of weeks and we recently got  some Aden + Anais (I think you can get them at target, but Amazon and offical website for sure) are HUGE and the best!!

  • I went three weeks early but the day before we went to bjs and bought diapers wipes and all our other shopping... She's four weeks old and we still have plenty of wipes and diapers! We've gone through almost 1000 wipes and well over 200 diapers but it was so nice to have yogarts cereal oatmeal and other quick foods in the house! Baby wise... Def diapers and wipes, sheet savers! We have three and I keep one on our couch just for diaper changes and the other in the pack n play In our room. My lo loves the miracle blanket only swaddle she will tolerate! I agree with burp clothes pads and bra nipple pads too! We found out after the fact that bundle mes aren't recommended but they have car seat covers you can get... We have loads of blankets and use all of them. Hand sanitizer to have in the diaper bag and around the house! **stool softener**

I live in an apartment building, I needed so much more clothes, swaddle blankets then someone who has a washer and dryer in their apt/home.
