c-section and yeast problem... anyone else?

I'm guessing I might be the only one because my OB made me "that girl" in the office that all the nurses had to parade in and out of the room to look at...

When I removed my steri strips my skin got really itchy and started to smell a bit. I went in to the office. Not only did I have an allergic reaction to the adhesive tape, but also had a horrible skin yeast infection around the outside of where the tape had been.

Obviously it wasn't enough to humiliate me, but the doctor actually forgot to call in my prescriptions because he was so worried about leaving the office early to start the holiday weekend. Office closed until Monday, no doc on call. Not really sure how that works, but basically I'm stuck until then unless I go to the ER. Has anyone else treated a skin yeast infection? I was told no creams, etc. The powder he prescribed doesn't have anything similar OTC, along with the pill he prescribed... I've already talked to the pharmacist. Getting kind of desperate, so I figured I'd ask here. TIA

  • This happened to me. It's not that uncommon. I was told to use lotrimin cream OTC. Also blow dry the incision on cool any time it's wet - like after a shower. GL!

  • I had yeast on my c-section scar, but I was given a cream. It actually spread to the creases in my legs, and my butt crack (that hurt) before it got better.

I think I'd consider trying a monistat cream of some kind before I paid the ridiculous co-pay for the ER, but that's just me.

Lotrimin ... that's what I was trying to think of.

  • Thanks ladies.

I don't really want to pay $100 for the ER visit just for prescriptions that will probably cost a lot as well, if I don't have to.

As for the creams - My primary had seen the yeast before my OB did, and he prescribed an anti-fungal cream. When I told my OB this he told me not to pick up the cream because it would actually make things worse Confused so he prescribed a powder... SUPER CONFUSED! Maybe I'll try cream for the next few days until I can get a hold of the OB, the itching is driving me crazy!

Also, he suggested using an abdominal binder. Have any of you used one? I find that it helps for a little bit, but after a while makes things worse as my skin moves around and traps in moisture. Am I using it wrong?

  • I'd definitely try the cream before going to the ER, I know how horrible that itching can be...I get dyshydrotic eczema on one finger of my hand...it causes tiny blisters that itch like crazy and nothing works to get rid of it! If the cream works great, if it doesn't just stop using it.

  • I'm a new mom and nurse that had the same problem. Use Lotrimin cream! Thats the medication prescribed. Whether its powder or cream doesnt matter. I actually liked the cream on my incision cause it had a cooling effect since my incision was red and warm (not infected though!) Youll notice results after the first application. Put it on 3 times a day.
  • Clean with vinegar and water. Yeast cant live in an acidic environment. Sorry for bold - phone post.
